Ok...newest issue with my Prius. Started hearing an occasional mooing noise from the engine bay a few days ago. It literally sounds like there's a cow under the hood.

This is ONLY when the climate control is on, so it's obviously related to that.

Plugged that info into ChatGPT & Google, and the consensus is that it's most likely due to:

The HVAC blend door actuator or HVAC recirculation door motor. It can also be the compressor failing too, but that's not as likely.

According to ChatGPT, this is more a nuisance than anything else, especially since the climate control is still working flawlessly except for the mooing. Which now happens every 20 seconds or so.

I'll be selling the Prius soon because I recently bought a truck camper. So I'm not overly concerned. However, this frigging sound will likely turn off potential buyers.

Is there any quick fix to eradicate this instead of having to take the dash apart to change the faulty parts and spending a fortune?

From what I understand, the repair job isn't that difficult, but like the combination meter problem I had a few years ago, most mechanics charge a bundle because taking the dash off is a royal PITA.

    TIA

Before there was ChatGPT and Google, people would investigate a new sound by using ears, or a mechanics' stethoscope (very cheap), or a stick or long screwdriver with one end pressed against bone beneath the ear (even cheaper), and find out what was making the sound.

It is still very good to do this, because a Google or ChatGPT search done before knowing where the sound originates is likely to send a person on all kinds of goose chases.

In this case, I've never heard anyone describe any HVAC door actuator being described as a 'moo' sound, and I've never heard an HVAC actuator sound being described as "from the engine bay". I've never heard of HVAC actuator sounds falling into any kind of "every 20 seconds or so" cycle. Index of suspicion very high on those ChatGPT answers.

Does the noise happen when the car isn't moving? If it does, and happens every 20 seconds or so, it ought to be quick work for you to come back and say "I listened in the engine bay and heard it coming from this thing". That would be a great help in diagnosis.
