Here is a lay press version about the above item, posted today by my nearest major newspaper (which they copied from WaPo):

COVID vaccine linked to broad protections against heart conditions, study finds

"The coronavirus vaccine reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events linked to COVID-19 — strokes, heart attacks, and hospitalization from heart disease — by about 40 percent, according to a new study. The findings, the latest in a growing body of research about the vaccine’s benefits for heart health, suggest such benefits observed in earlier studies have persisted for years.

The study, published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine, also suggested the vaccine has a broader public health benefit. The vaccine modestly reduced cardiovascular conditions, hospitalizations and deaths of all causes, including those not linked to COVID, researchers said.

Source:FDA panel considers a first-of-its-kind flu vaccine using mRNA technology | US healthcare | The Guardian

    a
US health advisers are debating a new kind of flu vaccine Thursday, the first made with the same mRNA technology that was key to ending the Covid-19 pandemic.

Moderna is seeking Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of its new shot , dubbed mFlusiva, as an option for people 50 and older. The FDA advisory committee meeting is a step toward a final decision ahead of the winter flu season.
    ...
In a study of 40,000 people age 50 and older, Moderna’s mRNA vaccine reduced flu cases by about 27% compared to those given another routinely used vaccine brand. Ahead of the meeting, FDA published a favorable review of that data and reported no safety concerns.

Moderna is seeking full approval for the vaccine’s use in the 50- to 64-year-old population – along with authorization for use in those 65 and older while it conducts additional testing.

I wonder how they do the comparison since the biggest problem seems to be guessing the correct strain

The mRNA process is much faster than the incubator egg method. So instead of predicting the strains with long production lead times, they can develop a strain specific vaccine much faster.

The sources told ABC News that there is 40% flu vaccination rate among recruits at the San Antonio base since the mandate was lifted.

If I'm not mistaken, that sounds like a lower-than-general-population number—by a lot?—as in, is the AF now tailoring its recruitment to appeal especially to the vaccine-resistant?
