Hey all, I searched for this topic in the Gen 5 forums and couldn’t find if someone had already posted about this. The ambient air readings on my ‘24 LE AWD seem to either (a) react very slowly to changes in ambient temperature, or (b) have a very wide margin of error. For example, on winter mornings I’ll be several minutes into my commute before the temp sensor settles close to what my home weather station was reporting when I left. Also, once the car’s temp reading has “settled,” it seems to hover just about 2 degrees higher than the weather station (based on observations when returning home). Although on really hot days recently, I’ve noticed that the weather station reading was trending several (4-6) degrees warmer than my car’s reading when I get home. Although, I suppose on these days the weather station’s temperature gauge could be holding residual heat from exposure to sun all afternoon. I keep wondering if the Gen 5 Prius’ temp sensor is less accurate because the active grille shutters are holding residual heat wherever the sensor is located. Does anyone have knowledge of where exactly the sensor is located, and whether the shutters might somehow be able to affect temperature readings??
My professional weather station has a radiation shield surrounding the temperature sensor that shields it from direct sunlight and reflected heat ---and--- an aspiration fan that continuously draws ambient air across the sensor. That's what it takes for acccuracy. Toyota's ambient sensor isn't engineered in that manner. But, it's better than nothing, right? Attaching document showing the location ...
