Hello guys, sometimes my prius battery indicator will go down to 1 bar. Ive looked online, and the lowest Ive ever seen it online is 2 bars which seems normal (40% SoC). Why does mine go down to 1?
Is it the original battery? Mine did that when it got weak. It surprised me! And it would quickly charge fully, almost to the 2 tabs that indicate the terminals. Time for a Sodium Ion Battery Pack!
Yes, its the original battery that has about 350k miles on it. I heard about that pack, I wonder how much better it is vs the standard NMH battery
I'm running it, it's GREAT! Very light, easy to install. It hold the charge much longer. You can run in EV longer than the oem battery.
when did you install the sodium ion pack, and how has it improved your driving experience? any significant difference in mileage? i'm considering replacing the oem one when it dies, but the oem one is actually $400 cheaper than the sodium ion pack. plus i know i'll get ~250k miles from an oem pack. the sodium ones look attractive than oem- more power for longer EV use, about 45lbs lighter, slightly more overall power, but i've seen too many good things about it
I gained about 5mph in the city. I averaged 38mpg, but had to drive easily to get it. I can now drive normally and get 42mpg without trying. On the highway, I had to drive easy to get up to 65mph, but usually kept it at 64 or 63 and averaged 44mpg. Now I can drive normal, or a little faster and drive 65-67, and get 48mpg. If I can draft behind a semi, I can get 52. I'm driving a little faster and more sporty, and get the mpg I did driving carefully with the oem pack. It would be a decent "guess" that you would get close to the mileage out of a replacement pack and you did with the original one. "IF" the blocks are NEW. No one seems to know if they are new ore "refurbished. Until you take it apart. But they might have stickers on they to seal it and if they are broken, you loose the warranty. Which is only 2 years. Unless you have to dealer install it. Then it's 3.
so the oem battery is basically a collection of reconditioned packs? i don't see "new" or "reconditioned" in the item description on their parts website how long ago did you install the sodium-ion battery? gains of 5mpg are impressive. is that throughout all seasons? would really help my summertime mileage in AZ not sure who has the 350k miles. i'm chugging along at 222k and no HV failure, yet
this seems to be creating confusion - in my first reply in this thread, i asked ASRDogman when he installed the sodium-ion HV battery in his prius, he hasn't answered that yet.
All Toyota OEM hybrid batteries purchased at a dealership are NEW. I do not know what ASRDogman is talking about in his post

I installed a Prototype to test it in September 2024, and put 22,513 miles with it. And installed the final version in August 2025 and have put about 12,000 miles or so on it. I not driving as much as I used too. Here is Florida, we has some freezing weather, for a change. But a lot of 40's weather. NOT issues with the Sodium Ion battery. And HOT and extremely high humidity the last few years. Still, no issues. It certainly holds it charge longer. I can drive in EV a lot longer! The charge/discharge cycle is very smooth. It's very light. I lifted it EASILY by myself. I had to have help getting oem one out. It is certainly a lot safer! Jack is a Great Help! It should last as long as the original. Realistically, how much longer will you be keeping the vehicle? Mine is a 2010, and I'm antique, certainly the car will last longer than me. But if the next person takes as good care of it like I did, it should last at least 10 years. i'm considering replacing the oem one when it dies, but the oem one is actually $400 cheaper than the sodium ion pack. plus i know i'll get ~250k miles from an oem pack. the sodium ones look attractive than oem- more power for longer EV use, about 45lbs lighter, slightly more overall power, but i've seen too many good things about it
