    With the way used car prices are I wonder if this would be cheaper to own and operate.

    But again, when you hear complaints about affordable cars it's not about new cars because new cars aren't what penny-pinchers are looking for. It's the used car market that is not affordable anymore because it's hard to find a used car that's both substantially cheaper than a new car and still has some decent life left on it.

    Look at the numbers. A 5-year-loan, $5,000 down payment, with a sub-prime interest rate of 13.22%, and taxes included, is a whopping $600 per month for the new 2027 Hyndai Elantra, not including insurance, fuel or maintenance. For your median wage worker, the payment alone is well over the 10% of income used for transportation recommendation from Dave Ramsey.
