Can anybody please tell me what the factory installed AUX input, hidden under the arm rest, does?
I tried my iPod in it and couldn't get it to do anything.

Maybe try another aux cable. I plug my ipod into it and listen to it over the sound system (just a plain aux cable mind you, I still have to select tunes on the ipod itself). And -- pardon me if I'm being too obvious -- make sure the stereo is set to aux.

The car serves as the headphones. You need a connector with two male ends like the one on your headphones. Press play on the ipod and then press the cd/aux button on the car stereo. My ipod shuffle works great.

What everyone else said... I even plugged in several crappy no-name MP3 players w/ a male-to-male plug, and it worked fine.

Please don't be insulted when I ask you this. Did you turn your Ipod on? Moreover, did you use the MFD or steering wheel controls to set the mode to AUX? Was your Ipod's volume at a satisfactory level and not muted? Was the stereo's volume level set too low?

am I right to assume that the Aux jack will not let you "charge" your ipod - that that must be done via the 12v outlet. Correct?

I assume there is no Applie proprietary jack that goes from the"bottom" of the iPod (the proprietary outlet) to the AUX outlet of the Prius. Correct?

Right -- if you want to charge it, you need to attach an ipod charger to the 12V outlet that is conveniently located right next to the AUX jack in the middle console. :D

This may seem like a stupid little thing, but it was seriously one of the final factors that made me conclude the Prius was for me! The Matrix, for example, had no handy place to plug in my ipod, or for that matter, to put it, so that eliminated it right there. Tho' I've never put it in words before, I think my criteria went something like this:

    1. Gas mileage
    2. Safety record
    3. Price (had to be under $25K)
    4. Storage versatility (fold down seats or mondo trunk a must)
    5. Would run my ipod (haven't listened to the radio --at all -- in two years)
    6. Cuteness/coolness/appearance of car
    7. Interior comfort/ability to fit a 5'3" driver and 6'3" passenger
