I am attempting to troubleshoot issues with the USB data port on my 2018. In the attempt to gain Android Auto, I purchased a head unit from a 2019(?) Prius, #86140-47660, which had wired android auto/carplay, which worked flawlessly.

Perfect! I am now a happy man.

However, I also wished to possess a CD player, for the impressive CD collection owned by my husband. In this interest, I managed to find a Nav unit (86140-47620) which had a CD player!

Upon install, I was saddened to find that for reasons left to only those crafty Toyota engineers, the base model stereo (w/o navigation, etc) has both Android Auto and Carplay, but the higher trim level stereos only come equipped with Carplay. What gives??

In an attempt to rectify this, I have purchased two Carlinkit devices (5.0 and Mini SE Pro), which reportedly can wireless connect either Android Auto or Carplay to a Carplay-only radio.

However, neither device will work with either stereo, because when Carplay attempts to connect, it will cause a brief dip in power that resets the device, causing a connection loop of misery. I have verified with a USB pass-through power monitor, which reports the device draws about 0.05-0.15 amps at 5.2V, up until the car attempts to connect carplay, upon which the power disconnects for less than a second, causing the Carlinkit device to power cycle.

I have confirmed this behavior is recreatable across both head units, with both devices, but not present when connecting wireless or wired AndroidAuto on either head unit or device.

Anyone have any ideas what may be up?
