Unhappy as a boy, Kim became youngest ever transsexual at 12

By Bojan Pancevski in Vienna, Sunday Telegraph
    Last Updated: 1:12am GMT 29/01/2007

A boy of 12 is believed to have become the world's youngest sex change patient after convincing doctors that he wanted to live the rest of his life as a female.

The boy - originally called Tim, but now known as Kim - has started to receive hormone treatment, in preparation for the operation that will eventually complete the sex change....

Oh, I thought sure you were joking and you'd clarify in your post that he'd just entered puberty. I still don't believe it.

I think it's between her, her family, and her doctors.

Exactly. There is no overriding reason for the state to become involved.

Of course you'll never get the news media to leave private people alone if they smell an entertaining story.

Why the concern here? Seems a lot better than switching a babies sex like parents and doctors decide to do sometimes before the kid can even have an opinion.

    WOW!

He/she will have to tell he/shes mate that she was a he when it comes time to marry as they wont be having kids without adopting... ;)

Thats the only real issue, becides hes kinda young to be making those kind of dicisions on his own and the parents for giving in to the idea. aside from that , no problem.

It's a non-issue; it's fun to discuss but really isn't any of our business.

    Still waiting for the pictures...
    [laughing]

Seriously, I'd guess that if a boy is going to do this, it would be good to do so before the testosterone begins to run rampant...broadening her shoulders, bringing a beard to her face, deepening her voice (think how you'd feel about all of this if, deep down, you've always felt yourself to be a woman...)

In a world where someone like her will probably be hassled in one way or another, her best bet would seem to me to be to just fit in and not be noticed by the general public in day-to-day living.

So, the sooner in life she transitions the better, I'd think.

Yeah, OK, 5 year old saves for sex change... No, there are far more issues there, no 5 year old ponders their sexuality on that level... there's a lot more to this story than meets the eye, regardless, I don't think you just simply perform a sex change on a 12 year old.

We might not be getting the whole story. But based on what we read, the kid was behaving like a girl from the time she was a baby. She did girl things, identified with girls, wanted to dress like a girl, and announced that she was a girl. She apparently had the sexual identity of a girl and a dread of turning (physically) into a man.

Not a spur-of-the-moment decision. If she made the right decision, she'll live a much more happy and fulfilled life than she otherwise would have done. If she made the wrong decision, she'll go through life neurotic, just like the rest of us (if for different reasons).

This article, from Spiegel Online, is quite detailed. Be sure to read all three pages.

Agreed, and nicely put as always. I think it's easy to confuse men/boys who like to wear women's clothing (crossdressers/transvestites/drag queens, etc.) with those who *at their very core* know that they're female (with or without female attire or makeup), and either have had or aspire to have sexual reassignment surgery.

I mean, from the outside it might look to us like the same thing (a "man" in women's clothing) but to the person themselves, their mode of dress might have a very different meaning.

I'm hesitant to delve too far into this subject without some certainty that it would be handled with a reasonable amount of respect/sensitivity by us here on PC. In my opinion, the feelings we're describing can all too easily be distorted and trivialized...and I personally don't want to feel that it's necessary for me to participate in one of our polarized discussions, in defense of transgendered individuals.

I posted this story here because I found it being discussed in another forum which is tends to be more conservative. I just wanted to see the differences in how the story was received on this forum. The most interesting thing I found was that the members on this forum seemed considerably better informed on the issues presented. Nonetheless, it does make a good article to discuss because it includes topics such as: What is an adult? when can a person make his/her own medical decisions? What ethical issues are presented in treating Kim for hormone replacement?, etc.

One of the interesting questions raided in the other forum was the question of why "You never hear about women wanting to get turned into men..."

I been led to believe that this picture (attached) is the girl in the article.

I met a girl (i.e. male->female) who was seven and had made that decision when she was five.

I believe (and I could be wrong) this has to do with the way we develop in the womb.

Initally, all of our bodies are 'female.' Between the 8th and 12th weeks, a hormonal process triggered by the mother causes the fetus to:
    1. Begin to form testacles
    2. Begin to 'form a 'masculinized' gender map in the brain (by this, I mean, the basic "am I a boy or am I a girl" identity).

Problem is, (1) is more easily triggered than (2)...and so it's possible to have cases where the body is masculine but the brain's gender map remains female.

This is why it's thought (but not proven) that there are more male to female transsexuals than female to male.

Also, from a practical standpoint, the range of gender expression allowed women is far wider than that allowed men.

I forgot the name of the show but PBS has had very good coverage on issues like this. I saw one show on mixed gender babies that were given a sex by their doctors and then grew up, some feeling the doctor had picked right and others that they had been changed the wrong way.

Some of these kids they interviewed were well under 12 and they knew exactly what they wanted to be.
