Cyclospora is getting clicks now with "explosive diarrhea" helping with that.

Various food parasites hit the news from time to time, and a comparison of their effects could rationalize this discussion. Hoping for a volunteer :)

Eating any raw food creates potential access for these critters to nutrient-rich intestinal environments. Some parasites are among the world's worst health hazards. For people not among the bottom billion or two, options towards personal safety. Categories below without expansion:

    Food choices.

    Raw food preparation.

    Cooking to 70 oC.

Personal - I go to a fancy restaurant where cooked meat is dipped in raw egg for fullest gourmet experience. Nope. Too much knowledge of chicken anatomy and microbiology for that.

A Chinese friend and student went to Puerto Rico and was surprised by the idea of vegetable crudites. Consumption of 'raw' here is more limited. But not always with rational basis .

You simply need to follow basic food prep rules for RAW or cook them. It's probably a bigger issue because kids now-a-days don't cook and/or information flows faster than verification. That old basic knowledge, seems to be lost in the younger generation.

I do like the night markets and street food, whenever I'm in China. I'm very selective and watch them cook my food. I don't take anything off the already cooked pile. I had naan bread out of a clay kiln in north western China, before it had become a thing. About 15-20 years ago. A few years before the Uyghur crack-down.

35 to 25 years ago I was in Central America and obliged to follow simple health rules. Harder to get 'the kids' (students) to do same. Sometimes they did not

One time I went to a US Doctor to pre-prescribe helpful medicines if things went wrong in the field. I talked past his/her/their objections and went to pharmacy for the meds. Viewing that, the face made by pharmacist was memorable. "Hope you feel better soon"

    "Thanks"

News has Taco Bell (TM) deleting lettuce from menu.

There are toxins that persist through 72 oC heat, but I know of none of those generating news clicks.

You wan na eat fugu fish? Alrighty then.

Taco Bell is notorious for food poisoning, trader joes for food recalls. I won't patronize either.

picked up menezumas revenge in Mexico (Giardia cyst) even though I followed the rule. some said fruits and veggies washed in tap water maybe. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, it was a long flight home
