After 4.5 years, I’ve just seen my highest estimated EV range: 65.5 kilometres (40.9 miles). While I do only have 25,000 kilometres on the odometer, I would have thought that age of the battery alone would have meant at least some range loss at this point. Thoughts?
Estimated range is a fictitious and overly generous and optimistic estimated value. In summer our range is estimated at 72km, in winter drops to 60-65km depending on the garage temperature. In reality I'm lucky to actually drive 7-8km for every 10km shown of estimated range in summer. Bottom line is don't trust the fuel economy computer for fuel economy or electric range. There is a reason why the trip meter graph only displays a range of 0-30 L/100km even when your car averages 4-5 L/100km - it makes the variability in the number less obvious for consumers to whine to their dealers about.
There is also the buffer in capacity to contend with. It's possible for the software to release some of that locked up capacity to compensate for loss in useable capacity.
You can expect some battery degradation over time but that rate is a function of charge/discharge cycles, age, and environment. Since you only have a 8kh/h battery you are not subjected to the additional fast-charge rate degradation that every is not worried about (yet...) 20-25 miles ain't nothing - and you have effectively unlimited ICE range. Without knowing the actual capacity when "fully charged" now versus when it was new, it's hard to go off the estimated range. I was getting similar numbers after 40,000km and 3 years back then before I traded it in. I was taking full advantage of the EV range so the engine really only ran on road trips. Toyota is also super conservative so there's a decent buffer on these batteries. I believe fully charged is only 81 or 82% true SOC.
it's all about driving conditions. climate, hvac use, speed, acceleration, topography, stops and starts, and etc. reduced battery capacity will reduce overall range, but capacity will never increase it.
Thanks for all of these comments, everyone. Even though estimated EV range is not 100% accurate, it is still noteworthy that I’ve seen the highest estimate after 4 years. In other words, it’s not the absolute capacity that I’m most interested in, but rather the estimated capacity now relative to past readings over more than four years. It strongly suggests to me that degradation has been minimal thus far. I appreciate the comment that possibly some of the protected reserve capacity may be tapped into by the car’s software and, of course, a cynical view would be that the manufacturer builds in such a process to mitigate consumer’s concerns about battery degradation. This car has been fantastic for me; so much that we now have a new RAV4 PHEV in the family, too.
Or it could mean your more recent trips have been more efficient than the past ones for whatever reason.
On my 2017 EU Prime guess-o-meter during summer I've seen similar figures until two years ago, i.e. up to 72 km of extimated range.. Since last summer, although with 73000 km only displayed by the odometer, my readings are consistently down to 53 km of range. As noted in previous posts, this outcome is generally due by a combination of factors of different weight: - changed driving habits: I used to drive mostly within the city, without depletinv the EV battery; now I moved country side and commute weekly (45 km , comprehending an EV portion of the trip made by 15 km of steep highway) and if I am lucky ICE kiks in when I see my house entrance gate, and this having started ICE during high speed part of my route, hence limiting the EV usage to the city and climb portions of the route. - warmer climate: here where I live it is not anymore rare seeing 42 degrees C on the dashboard, the use of HVAC during summer has undoubtedly increased during the last three summers. - use of Power mode: not sure that it is a factor, however I have increased the use of Power mode, especially in EV mode, I like the additional e-braking effect that comes with Power mode, and apparently it does not affect the perceived consumptions. But I am not sure of that. ..last but not least - traction battery aging. Yes, it does seem a little premature, but who knows? Toyota ensures 50 km of EV range for 10 years, so I am still within Toyota comfort zone (mean their comfort zone, not mine).
