FWIW, I've never considered you to be the least bit foolish.
I've known more than a few people, including our county Coroner growing up that eschewed the belt.

 

when my parents bought an impala convertible in '63, I wanted to stand on the seat with my hands in the air like a roller coaster. but it was our first car with seat belts, and they made me wear it.
I think it affected me mentally

 

My octogen mother still does that, if she's driving and I'm in the passenger seat. Never challenged her on it, either

Did prove she learned to drive in a world that wasn't totally 3-point yet. Did Dad do it? Nope, but for different reasons

 

Our '63 Ford Wagon either didn't have any seatbelts, or had them only in front. I remember dad, buying it used a couple years later, required belts be added all around as part of his purchase.

Those were just lap belts. I didn't see front 3-point belts until mom bought a new '72. And its 3rd point was detachable.

My future spouse occasionally did that. My immediate response was to insist she stop doing that, keep both hands on the wheel, and focus all attention on avoiding any collision in the first place. That extended arm distracts from the driver's crash-avoidance actions, and simply cannot provide anywhere near as much restraining force as the seat belt I'm wearing.
