    I think solid state batteries will end up in the same category as clean coal, carbon capture and honest politicians, a dream at best, achievable, maybe, financially viable ..... how many yrs have we been promised solid state batteries are just around the corner? how many $$ have gone into R&D? Do you really think that if it is ever achieved those who have invested all the money into it aren't going to want to get a profit on their investment?

    If Toyota can do better than Elon Musk and actually deliver on time, a product that actually works, the claim is 2028 but is that commercially available or one that actually last long enough to consider going into production?

    The first of the potassium commercially produced cells are already out there World's first 18650-sized potassium-ion battery aims to fill lithium gap once China gets hold of the technology, we may see big leaps in battery tech at a lower cost and built using more readily available materials ....

    No and no. Their trajectory for SSB is to be released in a few years, that’s their timeline.

    I don’t plan on replacing my vehicle by 2028 so I can wait.

    If I didn’t wait, id been a soother victim and towing the salty battery line.

    That's their story, and I thought it changed constantly over the years.
    Where is toyota going to pull this SSB out of?
    Their extensive battery research labs?
    Is that lab comparable to actual battery manufacturers' labs?

    You should research air cooled packs in EVs vs liquid cooled...the liquid cooled fared much better in my internet research hence why Tesla uses them. Even the new 2026 leafs are all liquid cooled now and lithium at that.

    Lithium batteries are all very fragile, even the most stable lifepo4 chemistries.

    NiCD, NiFE, Nimh even Fla are much more durable tolerating down to -40F temperatures, flatlining (you usually can once then partially recover), overcharging, puncture and other forms of abuse.

    lithium generally has more capacity and can have a much longer cycle life but any minor event and they can fail or light on fire. Lithium requires babying, kid gloves and a multitude of controls including environmental.

    From a general consumer usability standpoint lithium are total garbage requiring complex, expensive, failure prone bms, balancing, heating and charging circuitry along with heavy complex cooling and battery armor to reduce fire and damage risk.

    Half to three quarters of battery system cost is usually in the systems handling the battery cells not the actual cells.
    An immense savings in both weight, cost and complexity is possible if you can reduce or even eliminate those specialized systems.

    many sodium chemistries make the claim they can be shipped fully discharged which gets rid of hazmat requirements. Older claims made it sound like a minimal bms was needed and the balancing system could be eliminated as the cells were tolerant of overcharge/overdischarge
    Current generation sodium cells are only very unlikely to have a thermal event if overcharged but the original claims aren’t panning out.
    Solid state and lithium air are supposedly working in a lab but they too have higher thermal risk and still require active systems to use (contrary to claims that feel similar to early sodium claims)

    Until someone develops a dumb battery that can drop in at low cost without balancing or bms in place of Fla, cost and reliability will remain somewhat worse than it needs to be and usuage in the immense multitude of lead acid driven systems will remain risky.
