Axial flux motors are neat but I still don't see them as game changing. They might get the motors in the wheel hubs. That's about it. They're not necessarily any more efficient than radial flux motors.
A fan of Munro Associates, their examination showed less mass and material for the same power output. Also more efficient cooling. For aviation, a win-win. Efficiency, power-out / power-in, that is harder to quantify. When everything is running above 90%, it is hard to get excited about a few percent. Bob Wilson
I guess I'm also a bit excited, excited because: Electric aviation would be cool! And if axial motors help that come about, then awesome! Putting the motor in the wheel would be awesome too. And the size and weight of axial flux motors could help that become a reality. I guess making the motor smaller and lighter would free up a little more room and weight for a little more battery or a little more cargo space. But what I'm not so excited about: Cars are bigger than ever. Making motors smaller isn't going to fix that. Batteries are still the real weight problem.
