In New Bedford, Massachusetts, a patrol officer was placed on leave and faced a protective order extension in August 2026 after an internal affairs investigation found she allegedly used the department's Flock network to track her ex-girlfriend. The New Bedford Police Department subsequently suspended its use of Flock technology

 

It's good they punished the officer for misusing the technology.

can see where this type discussion of technology could easily head in the direction of do guns kill people or do people kill people ..or... parallel is AI technology good or does its potential for harm outweigh the good it can do.

There is certainly evidence that flock camera data has been misused at times by overzealous or flawed individuals

as you rightly pointed out, the problem isn't the Flock Cameras but the individuals who access the cameras


in our area of the country there have been numerous incidents with the flock cameras solving crimes including abductions, and two police shootings - one where an officer died.. the criminal who did that is now on death row in part because of the indisputable evidence supplied by the Flock Camera..

for me the balance is tilted in the direction of the good the cameras can do

realize there are certainly good discussions to be had/made on the use of Flock Cameras both for and against their use

 

Turn on the cameras 24 / 7 . Record everything. A judicial warrant required to review the recordings.

 

Adjacent to topic. In a bonehead move, I left my passport in a taxi. Wife and I went to nearest police station and asked to view their surveillance videos to get plate # of taxi. The extent of surveillance in China is a matter of news interest.

She is Chinese citizen; I am not sure that I could walk in by myself and say "let me into your special room". Anyway I have been on the inside and saw the extent of surveillance. At least in sleepy Kunming. It's a lot.

Plate # of taxi was not revealed (there's the adjacency) but wife has additional skills and passport was recovered.

 

I'll bet there's no protesting the cameras

 

I suppose one could protest but if that led to any response, it would not be the desired one.

Here's another. Wife's family art shop has video cameras inside for security - no big deal. But they also have one outside, public space, viewing the entrance. I am not sure that would be legal in all countries.
