I'm in favor of a dollar coin.
    Bring it on!

And make the two dollar bill noble again.

I used to ask for them as change when i saw them in the drawers, those and the 50 cent coins.

I had a few dollar coins given to me as quaters once, right after they started the whole states quaters thing, I tried handing them back, and the lady was like "NO those are the new quarters" your loss, my gain!

I mean, after all, what do you get a man like Bush for Christmas, when he ALREADY has Saddam Hussein's personal dual pistols hanging on the wall!!! That's it, his image on currency!

I'm a big fan of the sackajawatchamacllits. Why do we need a new one?
I play poker weekly and over time, we end up with a huge amount of quarters which takes forever to count out the 5 or 10 bucks you owe someone. So once a month I take all the accumulated quarters to the bank and trade them for the gold sackajews. The susan B's, I have to return, since drunk poker players can't tell them apart from a quarter. Anyways, the gold ones are so much better for poker. But inevitably, people hoard them and throw their quartersin the pot, and if they win big and have 40 gold ones, they go spend them instead of keeping it in our poker circulation. Bastards!

My Dad just uses chips. He's got a monthly poker night, third Thursday of the Month. Except November and December.

I was talking to a vending machine guy and he was explaining how the money counter and the change maker work. I made note that it is not physically possible to return $1 coins or $2 bills.

He said that they don't bother because you don't see many of them on the street.

I asked if they don't tender them because the denominations aren't on the street or if those denominations aren't on the street because vending machines don't tender them.

Some days opportunities just present themselves. :D

I have a friend who saves up the gold dollar coins for Talk Like a Pirate Day. Then when he gets the bill for lunch, he slams them on the table and says, "Arrr! Do ye take Dubloons here, lassie?"

    I have interesting friends.

As a historian, I'm looking forward to seeing Martin van Buren, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Grover Cleveland on coins (though maybe not Nixon...). I try to use the $1 coins whenever possible and whenever I have them - they're much easier to use at tollbooths than paper dollars (at least for the $1.25 toll on the W.Va. Turnpike).

I like the idea of the dollar coin, but that might be because both Susan B. Anthony and Sagajawea are strong, heroic figures from our American history, and the coins help promote the history of women in America.

Presidents, on the other hand, are just a bunch of gangsters. The best were dishonest, and the worst were (or are) raving morons, madmen, and psychopaths. The idea of presidents on the new coins makes me prefer the dollar bill. At least Washington died a long time ago, and you can fold his picture to show a mushroom.

It may take time, because there will be intense opposition, and there are still places that don't accept it, but some day physical money will be eliminated and it will be all plastic. Credit cards, debit cards, and money cards tied to their own independent account, like gift cards.

I hesitate to predict that some day everyone will have an implanted chip or a UPC code tatooed on their wrist as in the movie Idiotocracy, but it could happen. Then there'd be no need for money or change. Just scan your wrist and the charge is deducted from your account.

The only vending machines that returned dollar coins was the "new" vending machines in the Post Office some years ago. These were the machines that also sold individual stamps and accepted pennies. They are probably all gone now. The current machine only takes plastic. Slot machines in AC do not take coins.

Our candy machine at work returns dollar coins. When they stock them. Lately they've just been stocking quarters. Don't ask me how I know.

How about my personal favorite, Warren G. Harding, although Bush is giving him a run for his money.

I'm all ready. I've been collecting them for a while. NYC subway metrocard machines and post office machines accept and return $1 coins. I've often referred to them as my retirement fund sine I know that the bank will take them, but no one else seems to want them. I purchase them from co-worker who can't wait to get rid of them.

I always TRIED to use the dollar coins but either the bank didn't have any or retailers wouldn't use them when giving back change.

The solution, mint the coins and phase out the dollar note over time, little by little distributing any more dollar notes.

Then, once that has been accomplished, let's move on to getting the USA on the Metric system of measurement. IT'S SO MUCH EASIER to deal with units of 10 instead of 12!!

Good heavens, man, are you trying to get yourself killed? How could you possibly utter such blasphemous treason? America may yet be dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th century, but go easy, would ya? B)

Actually, casinos are moving away from coins. I think it's too costly compared to credit cards, plastic player's cards, and bills. I was up at Lake Tahoe last month . . . the ambiance was just sucked out of the place. Before you use to hear all the coins falling into the tray, and an aura of excitement was in the air (along with the cigarette smoke - cough!!). Now it's like someone stuck cotton balls in your ears and all you hear is the drone of the electronic game noise, an occasional yell of excitement from a slot player, and the ever present smell of stale cigarette smoke. Pathetic. :(
