I bought my Prius in April 2006 and I have to say, the car is OK, mileage is OK, the tech is OK, but if there were no HOV stickers I would likely have chosen another car.

The (sad) fact is that the HOV stickers have a significant value for some. When the Bay Bridge is backed up into the Maze (if you live in the SF Bay Area you know what I'm talking about), Fastrak is *not* saving you any time. With HOV stickers, instead of sitting in traffic for an hour to get to the toll booths, you blow by the jam in 3 minutes.

As someone else mentioned, if HOV saves you $50-$100/day in "time", that adds up to $10,000-$20,000/year in "time", or $50,000-$100,000 over the life of the program. Which is an incredible benefit. Picking up and dropping off carpoolers would cut into the time savings so "regular carpooling" doesn't have the same value in terms of time savings.

Anyway, just wanted to point out that not getting stickers would be incredibly frustrating, if that's one of the main reasons you wanted the car. Of course, if you need the guarantee of stickers, get a natural gas vehicle.

I firmly believe we're not going to see a dramatic shift in attitudes around carpooling and taking public transit until gasoline is over $5/gal, maybe more like $10. I have no basis for this other than $3.50/gal wasn't making much of a dent, so subjectively it feels like $8 or so would really force the issue. Imagine paying $80 to fill up your 10 gal Prius tank that lasts a week or two, while the SUV next to you is paying $160 to fill up a 20 gal tank that will maybe last them a week at best. When you start paying more per week for gas than for groceries, you start looking for other ways to get around.

Each Prius buyer has his/her own "true reason" for buying, so the comment is absolute ONLY for that person. My primary reason was twofold: [a] Technonogy of the Prius and Fuel economy. The environmental aid is a most welcome extra, but still not my 'true' reason.

Getting just a bit OT here: It is extremely inconvenient to carpool or take public transit. Studies have repeatedly shown that you have to save a PILE of money before the convenience of going where you want, when you want is outweighed.

Here in the SF Bay area, when it becomes more expensive to drive due to gas prices, bridge tolls etc. and more people begin taking public transit, the transit unions strike for higher pay and the transit agencies raise their prices saying, "We need more money, and it is still no more expensive than driving!" And the drivers say, "If it costs the same then I think I'll just drive" and then transit agencies complain about decreased ridership and of course we all suffer the increased roadway congestion.

My husband's HOV sticker means that on the days his commute carpool only has 2 people instead of 3 people (one of the members only works 3 days per week), he can still use the carpool lane. I have no moral angst about that.

Wow, I hadn't checked this forum in a few weeks.

First I have to say, many of you chastised me for coming onto this forum when I was red blooded angry about the sticker issue.
You stated I was cry babying over it and so forth.

What I find very funny is....most of those who responded aggressively to me seemed to be cry babying the most.
What exactly were YOUR reasons for all the angry responses and personal attacks against me??
    Hypocrisy at it's finest.

Now, a few of you ACTUALLY understood my situation and related to my commute and reasons for purchasing this car with a high degree of understanding. You are the people with the voice of reason.

I got flamed for buying a car to save time in MY LIFE.
But MANY here jumped to conclusions and blasted me for not buying a car for the reasons THEY felt I should by a car. Wow...talk about needing to find better things to do with THEIR time and their life. That just blows my mind for those people to come on this board and be ANGRY at me for getting upset because I was lied to and misled and spent $31K on a car whose purpose was NOT the purpose they bought their car for.

Wow, just blows the mind to the selfishness of thought some have.

For the record, the "class action lawsuit" was not to sue the state for monetary gain or to buy back the car...it was to require them to issue the stickers for those who bought the car in January 2007 because we were told there was another 10000 stickers available as of January 2007.

But that's beyond the point now.

For those of you with the rational thinking and cool headed responses, as well as the understanding of my situation, thank you.
For those of you who just came onto this thread to bitch and moan about my "anger tangent", I feel for you, you are seriously in the need of getting a life. Bitching and moaning about someone else's rightful bitching and moaning. LOL
At least I had a good reason!!

Take care all, I will be keeping the Prius and have resolved my situation.

I've been reading this topic since the beginning and well I do feel for you that you asked and everyone said you could get stickers but you should have done a little more research before buying the car. Suing is not the right way to handle this. The courts have better things to do.

That said I think you bought the car for the wrong reasons. Why did you buy the Prius if your time is valuable?

    and I quote

[edit] Since the OP deleted his posts I would like to say I'm quoting Driver-72

That's fine by me. I dont enjoy 50+mpg either. I want an EV.

We all know that the Prius has a top speed of 5mph so why did you pick a slow boring car? Get a Viper!

If your time is that important cram bunch of people in your other FAST COOL cars and you can get in the HOV lane with out the stickers. You would save 31 thousand dollars!

I'm glad you resolved the situation but I think you went a little overboard.

If the HOV lane was your only reason, you could probably pick up a couple of bums to ride with you for minimum wage, or maybe even a six pack a day, and come out ahead over buying a whole new car.

    From your first post:
"I want to start a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT against the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles, that will either force them to honor their misrepresented website information as well as their own employees false information and issue these stickers to everyone who bought a Prius or Civic Hybrid in January 2007, or they must purchase our cars back from us at full purchase cost."

You stated in your original post you wanted the stickers OR DMV to BUY BACK the car. Did you delete your original post? You took your valuable time to come back and whine about the people who didn't agree with your whining in the first place. Kinda like what you're doing now? You post you want to start a class action suit and to see what the possible interest is and don't check this thread for two weeks? Right. Be happy, at least it "was resolved" in the end for you.

Anyone care to speculate at what this means if it doesn't mean the DMV cashed his check and he's got his stickers?

What kind of weasely answer is "resolved my situation"? Seems like a coverup for going off half cocked, whining and complaining for no reason and then not willing to admit it was all for nothing when the stickers arrive. Otherwise why the doublespeak response? Not man enough to admit it? Why not explain the "resolution"?

Would be a nice touch to inform the other people in his situation. After all, there are hundreds or even thousands of them. Unless of course the solution involved a photo printer

    You know my guess.

He's got his stickers and all of the previous whining in his original and subsequent posts makes him look like a cry baby. Too embarassing to leave them and too embarassing to admit he got his stickers. Hence all we get is 'resolved the situation'.

Either he got his stickers or he sold his car. I'm betting he got his stickers.

    My guess:

He made his original post from the office, then, in a fit of rage, he punched out the secretary.
He was subsequently fired from his job and no longer needs the HOV stickers for a commute which no longer exists.

His other problem was also solved . . . sort of.
He no longer needs a class action lawyer, but a reference to a good criminal defense attorney would be appreciated.

    - HEY! It's a guess.

More telling is his willingness to drop his passionate, humanity saving idea of a class action lawsuit.
HIS problem was solved . . . so screw everyone else.
Apparently, for him, it's every man for themselves! <_<

    What a one-way.

And now he is going to walk away like a little baby and say, “I'm not telling.â€

    Waaaaaaahhhhhh.

    See if I care. :p
