I'll take the first phev or ev that comes available that can do 60 mph in ev mode and 6+ mile range. According to press releases there will be several alternatives by the end of 2008 such as Th!nk, zap, miles electric, etc... Here is a think MS powerpoint presentation:

Had to look up what an HHR was -- that's GM's PT Cruiser knockoff. Sure enough, built on the Cobalt chassis. Weighs 3200 lbs, 144 hp engine as currently built. Versus 2800 for the Cobalt, 144 HP. A lot taller, a lot less aerodnamic, but more than adequate rear leg room (39.6") and a hatchback to boot.

Heck, yes, that would do just fine. I'd be extremely interested in a 40-mile serial hybrid version of that. I'd settle for 30. Maybe even 20. The inefficient retro styling is a drawback -- putting a serial hybrid powertrain in that shell would be like trying to sell a jet-propelled hearse. But I'd buy it even with the retro styling.

In fact, now that I think about it, I'm driving Mazda's version of the HHR. Mazda5 is to Mazda3 what HHR is to Cobalt -- the underpowered stretch "utility" version of a small sedan. So it's no surprise that would fit my needs. Wonder if GM would be flexible enough to put the Volt powertrain in that body.

funny I saw a sticker saying Voltswagon on the back of a prius. But anyway unless its a viable car, its not an answer to me.
