BINGO! I can't vouch for his $3000 but different amounts in the right places can make a significant difference. IMO a good tax preparer looks for different scenarios to legally reduce the income tax liability.

For some people it is possible that a $3000 deduction cost them the $3150 credit. If there is a choice between taking a deduction and taking a credit, generally it is better to take the credit.

Hey, neither am I- we get to claim our kids, oh and our tithes to our church, that is it. But I didn't get the credit. You shouldn't use such a broad brush to paint everyone with. Everyone's circumstances are different. We are far from a McMansion. And am frankly tired of a bunch of yahoos on here saying that whatever anyone else has (kids, car, house, etc...) they are certain they have to help pay for it. No one is paying for MY house, MY kids, MY car, MY groceries, or anything else. Unless you think that a husband/father who actually works for his money is getting a handout from the government. If that is the case, then if you work a full time job, YOU ARE TOO! I don't know, perhaps we are a small part of this countries population that lives like this (let me spell it out, in case there is further confusion) My husband works a full time job. He is the sole provider for our home. I stay home and raise our 3 children, 2 cats, and 2 dogs. We do not have any outside help (no child support or government help- these are our 3 children together, and this is our only marriage). We BUDGET our money to afford a reliable, high mpg car, and a sturdy, safe 1600 sqf home. By far not a McMansion. Because we budget our money and scrimp on a lot of things, we almost have our car paid off already. It is a matter of priority for us. The car payment being gone would certainly free up a lot of money each month for us. But you do what you got to do. We are a green household. Why is that not enough of an explanation for anyone? Get off your high horse, inform yourself, and note that no one is stating that you bought a car, or a house, or have kids, or anything like that and we are paying for it. I am sure that if anyone cared enough about your lifestyle or why you bought the car or who is paying for it they could probably find something to gripe about. But who cares? Does your post offer any real explanation about why some people aren't getting the full credit promised? If not, why did you post in the first place? This reply of mine certainly doesn't but I refuse to allow a stranger who doesn't know me or my family infer that we are sponging off of the gov. Remember, point a finger at someone and there are 3 pointing back at you.
