Coastal EV mode died

    Looking for help in diagnosing this problem.

    Have 2006 prius. Installed the Coastal EV mode mode. Worked fine. Now, it doesn't work. Pulling the cruise level toward me and holding for 2 secs or so, nothing. If the ICE is running (after warmup) and cruising below 34mph, ICE won't shut down. If trying to go into EV mode while the ICE is in warmup mode (yes, I know it won't go), I no longer get the warning on the MFD that "can't enter EV mode now."

    So, something definitely up. It IS curious that, although I don't drive it that often, the problem seems to have occurred after the car's first service period at the dealer. Any chance they could have somehow disabled the programming?

    If I wanted to test the EV mode programming to see if it's still working, can I just short one of those wires to ground? Which one?

    Bill,
    First I would check your connections again. In particular, check to see if the pin you inserted into the wiring harness is seated properly. If that doesn't work call or email coastal. Warning, be patient and persistent with trying to get a hold of Coastal. Good Luck!!

    Have you eye-balled your connections? In particular your tap to ground and the pin in #27 on the ECU...those can pretty easily come lose. Of course you've got another tap with the Coastal rig so check that as well.

    The programming hasn't, I'm absolutely confident, been changed. It's highly unlikely the dealership has any clue that the mod is there. If they do know there's something there they probably don't know what it is. There's been no TSB issued about disabling any EV mods.

    But, if you've got to test you just need a momentary ground to pin 27 to test.

    Has it been brutally cold where you are? I've noticed a possible connection between temp and the thing not working. It's been warmer here lately and it's been working fine again.

    Yeah, but I'd not expect a bad wire connection. It can happen, of course, but...

    I did just visit, or tried to visit, their website.

    I got a "service unavailable" page. Hope that doesn't mean anything bad.

    do you have their phone number, in case the website doesn't come up for a while?

    That depends on your reference. Yes, we had a few days of really cold whether a week or so ago. Got down to the low thirties. :) But it's much warmer now.

    The EV mod looks like it's working fine if you go the message that said it can't go into EV mode. There's just some other factors that prevent the Prius from entering EV mode. Temperatures, SOC, etc... could be preventing EV.

    It sounds like a connection came loose to me... I would try shorting that pin on the computer to a ground source.

    You don't mention where you are from so I don't know how cold it is in your area.

    I've found that on occassion with the 2005 with the Coastal EV mode that sometimes pulling the cruise lever for 2 seconds I would get no response. No beeps, nothing. I held the lever in longer, much longer (10 to 15 seconds, one time recently when it did this, and found that it finally did respond. I think the time to respond may be proportional to the temperature.

    Well, it doesn't get as cold around these parts as most of the rest of the country. We're in So Cal!

    I did get in there and "mess" with the wires. Was able to short to ground and it worked that way. Buttoned it all back up and now it works! Sure implies a loose connection somewhere.

    That's OK, for now, as the OEM EV button is on its way to me. :D

    I suggest you do not do business with this "organization". They do NOT respond and have no customer service. I have made it my job to go through Priuschat and make sure any threads that mention them also point to this thread:

    Well, the loose connection was likely mine. I also have their door-lock module and it's worked fine ever since I installed it.

    On a similar note, I have now received and installed Sigma's EV button. Boy, was that a surprise. A single sheet listing the contents (written to handle both 04-05 and -06+). It says for the -06, there is no "blue wire" (that's for the 04-05) with a connector for the ECU, and that one should rip apart the steering wheel column to get at the flasher pin. Of course, no instructions for that included. In fact, no installation instructions at all. They simply say,

    "1. Go to PriusChat.com
    2. Use the Search feature of the site & use EV Installation (italics mine) as search words, related threads will be shown. Good luck & enjoy."

    Guess that means good luck finding the instructions and doing the mod. ;)

    (I did find some instructions on web.mac.com, but those would not print out on my PC with any of the pictures nor captions so had to rely on memory (not having a wireless laptop computer) to help me get through it, and since I had Coastal's mod, I just tapped into their ECU wire and didn't have to attact the steering wheel column).
