"I Would Get a Hybrid But . . ."

I would just tell them to get a hitch and tow a small trailer

 

I nearly convinced my dad to buy himself a Pruis but then he started to look at KIAs and stated that they are more in his price range and get nearly as good economy.

I'm very "interested" in the Prius due to the fabulous fuel consumption.

However, the MAJOR problem for me is that I think the car is absolutely hideous looking and the interior looks video arcade like and the seats look like junk. :huh:. I'm hoping that the "09" will be more appealing 'to me'.

Our cars are hideous, *inside and outside*, but atleast the mileage is great

I paid the same for my Prius in 2005 as I paid for my Saturn SC2 in 1996. The Prius is bigger, holds more passengers and more cargo and has more amenities, like a cd player and a nav screen. The seats are more comfortable and the tranmission is smoother than anything I've ever driven. And I have less maintenance so even after I bought it I'm still paying less.

 

Them: "I would buy a hybrid but... I'd like to vote with my wallet for a car that doesn't require gasoline."

Me: Good on you.

My reply was that even though the Prius is made in Japan many of Toyota’s cars are mad in America. I also pointed out that a large number of GM vehicles are manufactured in other countries. Let me just say this after many months of research he decided to get the Honda hybrid as he liked the looks better. I say it’s a step in the right direction even though I don’t like Honda. It also beets him buying a GM care with horrible gas mileage.

 

can't haul anything? we just bought a portable dishwasher and put it in the back to take it home. the guy we bought it from was stunned...

 

Them: "It's not fast enough"
Me: "On the low end you have an abnormally large amount of torque available instantly if you really want to Jackrabbit to that next red light."

Them: "Such-and-so other car costs less."
Me: "What's-its-bucket car doesn't have features like the Prius. In fact, you have to jump pretty high up the car food chain to get the same features. A fully loaded Prius still costs less than most cars with a comparable set of neat stuff."

Them: "I want seat warmers."
Me: "Your butt is a great source of natural gas. Find some way to harness that for heat instead."

Them: "I want power seats."
Me: "So do I."
(oops, that's not a very good argument!)

Them: "It's ugly."
Me: "You and I must be looking at different cars. I think it's pretty cool looking. The original Prius is a bit of a dog though."

Them: "All that new technology will break and be expensive to fix."
Me: "Aside from the good basic warranty and available extended warranty for a reasonable price at Priuschat.com, a lot of the tech stuff is built to require less maintenance than your average car. For example, there's no transmission, and no starter motor, both of which can become substantial repairs or replacements in your car's lifetime."

Them: "All the controls are confusing."
Me: "They can be. Get to know them though, and you'll find you only use a few buttons on the steering wheel during any given drive, and don't need to look at the MFD unless you're a FE nut."

Them: "It doesn't meet those impressive EPA numbers."
Me: "Neither does any other car, and they're usually off by about the same percentage too."
(sorry, that one always bears repeating though.)

Them: "The hybrid battery will die and cost $8k to replace."
Me: "No it won't, and if it did it would probably still be covered under the generous warranty."

I could probably go on all day! In case I haven't said it before, I really like my Prius. Toyota should pay some of us for doing sales pitches. If someone mentions my car at a party, watch out because I will give them the whole song and dance.

If you keep it in the Prius, it really WILL be a "portable" dishwasher. AND you'll be invited to lots of parties, methinks. Of course, significant weatherproofing will be needed in your neck of the woods this time of year...

We have 2 portable dishwashers. One's 10, the other 13.

 

Almost every time I mention my Prius, someone says, "But don't you have to plug it in?"

I would have preferred my Prius be made in the US. But you also need to bring out the point that most of the oil consumed in the US is imported, especially on the East Coast, and I have just reduced in a major way my consumption of foreign oil.

I personally wish they made a hybrid Rav4 or CR-V. I won't buy the Escape.

Be a two-car family, with one car a hybrid. It doesn't have to be a Prius.

 

Here's a familiar one:

My answer:

Big deal. I figure save a little over $100/month on my 100 mile per day commute. But, my car payment went up about $100/month over my now paid off Honda Accord. So it's a wash. But figure that the Prius price is just about the same as any nice Non-hybrid car price out there. So the payment is going to be the same to replace an older, worn out car (if buying new). So I bought a Prius and I'm proud of the fact that I save the world on gas useage and CO2 output into the atmosphere.

Isn't that really why Toyota developed the Prius in the first place?

Everyone is so worried about the non-heated seats, the lack of quick heat in the winter (I think it's pretty good actually), the actual mileage VS. the published figures (no one else meets them either).......blah, blah, blah.....

Wth? Buy the Prius to make a difference in the environment.....it's a MUCH more than adequate mode of transportation.

These people just don't have a leg to stand on when talking about lack of reasons to buy a Hybrid when looking for a new car.

The world needs to WAKE UP. :angry:
