It's sort of not a fair question. If you don't vote Kirk you're not a "real" Star Trek fan...or you 'don't understand' b/c he was the original.

Still, I voted Piccard...I just liked his style, he was a much better actor, and I saw the shows as an adult so had better opportunity to appreciate that part of the series.

This is a common question among Trekkies - and hotly debated.

While the original series will be special for launching the biggest phenom in the entertainment universe, The Next Generation is how Gene Roddenberry wanted to do Star Trek in a number of ways.

I'm almost going to show my hand, but knowing the beliefs of most members at PC, I expect a clear-cut favorite.

An amusing tangent - at www.startrek.com there is a troller named Autostop.

I'm not sure if I like Picard because I like him or if I like Patrick Stewart's rendition of King Claudius in Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Maybe it is that Kirk is the Redneck and Picard the Bostonian.

I voted Kirk because he combines the sex drive of Bill Clinton with the diplomatic skill of George W. Bush.

Sorry, but I would vote for Ben. As he was the captain on my FAB FAVE STAr TREK show, Deep Space Nine.

But as far as ENTERPRISE goes, I vote for Archer.

    Just because.

Congratulations for figuring out my game! :D

Considering the aversion most PC members have to what Spock on Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country dubbed "cowboy diplomacy", I was counting on Picard in a landslide. Besides, Picard thinks situations out more and is (unconvincingly) French.

The results so far do not suprise me.

Given the choices, i went with Picard, but only because he's a better actor. It might be better to give all the choices in a poll, i think you'd see some interesting results...

Kirk - Bush I - At least he got things done without blowing up the universe
Picard - Clinton - Good diplomacy, didn't resort to the military very much
Sisco - Bush II - Too gun happy and religious
Janeway - Truman - Attempting diplomacy, fighting the entire way, and in the end dropping the atomic bomb on the Borg.
Archer - Washington - Forging a new way in uncertain times, setting the foundation for everything that came after.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! Turning the poll into a political discussion! Picard was simply the better actor. Kirk I like because he never took himself too seriously and I like his travelocity commercials.

    I voted Picard.

While I consider myself right wing (but moving towards right of center) - I voted Picard.

Maybe this was not a fair poll, but I still think the political leanings of PC members favor Picard.

    He was.

Generally, the Kirk/Picard debate is much closer in the general population of Trekkies.

I have imagined a Star Trek episode that Kird and Picard get switched to the other's Enterprise - Kirk in the 24th century - Picard in the 23rd. Imagining Picard doing Kirk is like Chirac doing GWB (although he did atmospheric nuke tests in the South Pacific  ). Imagining Kirk doing Picard - what fun. :D Shatner said his pausing was him trying to remember lines. It reminds me of some of the aggressive stop-and-go gridlock traffic. To my astonishment - Shatner did Shakespeare plays, but imagine him doing Hamlet as Capt Kirk....

Any Trekkie who says they like Kirk more is just brain-dead from watching too much trek. He's just such a poor actor, and the show is so campy (which is not to say that I don't appreciate it... I do).

There's just no comparison between the two. Picard was not only a better actor, but the series ran much longer, allowing for a much more developed, relatable character. There's something for everyone to like in Picard, but Kirk is 0-dimensional.

And yes, you assumed way too much by leaving Archer off your list. Not that I think he'd get the votes. Seemed like they were trying really hard to make a character right in the middle of a Kirk-Picard hybrid.

I was trying to illustrate the right-left leanings of PC. Kirk seemed "red" - Picard "blue".

It was not intended to slight Sisko, Janeway or Archer.
