Probably not; SE/SS consists of not just the transceivers but also extra electronics in the door handles. Could always ask your dealer, though...

    Answer is NO
Only in Japan has SE add on option at dealer. Which cover driver side door and rear hatch only but its run around 460bucks.

My Preto Prius doesn't have SS/SE either, but I'm still very very very happy with my car... it's not that big a deal.

I beg to differ. SS/SE is addictive. I had to go back to my old car for 2 days. I hated two things. Taking my keys out of my pocket and the amount of force I had to use to get it stopped!

Why doesn't everyone just get a number 9?

Or at least a 7 if you don't need the GPS. Figure, how much more a month would it really cost you? 20, 30 bucks a month? Its worth it.

actually, i would have loved a number 9, but my mom told my dad to buy me a new car, this is the one i wanted, and i didn't want to push it, know what i mean? also, i live on the central coast of california, and only 3,6, and 9 are available to me. but i got my #3 last night, and i love it love it love it, and the keyless entry is spoiling me enough....this prius is replacing my 95 toyota 4x4 pickup! it had power nothing...so...i'm already getting spoiled, and appreciating every nanosecond....thanks for all the input though!

Because not everyone can afford it, nor is everyone interested in it.

I know exactly what you mean! When I was in High School I had a problem with grades part my fault part my dyslexia that I had not bothered to learn how to cope with. (Maybe that makes it my fault X2 but there was no help for learning disorders in those days) My dad had a "talk" with me. One of those what are you going to do with your life deals. He got mad and "said if you ever get into grad school I will buy you a new car" There was some question at the middle of my sophomore year weather I would graduate from high school much less get into college. Need less to say I got into college graduated and got into grad school. He paid off. He was that kind of guy never went back on his word good or bad as far as I know. So I looked around and wanted a 240Z first model year. He said he fought the Japanese but he would not buy one of their cars. Lot of WW2 vets are were that way. European cars were OK. Not logica but I knew I should not push it. I got a Fiat 124 Spider. Great fist car for 1970. You were wise grasshopper not pushing it. Good move. You have your first car and I expect you will remember it always. It is a good thing enjoy. Does your car have a name. My roommate in college started me on naming cars you can curse at them better when they have a name.

I turned off my SS/SE after reading the manual and seeing that the car sends out intermittant signals looking for the key whenever SS/SE is on. According to my dealer, several months after I placed my original order (in November 2003), Toyota decided to make only two packages available to speed production: one with, one without navigation. Was he shitting me?

    Kathryn,
In '04 package lingo those would be #7 and #9. Think that in the '05 lingo those are now #4 and #6. #7 is also know as AM. Waiting for the AM we ordered in June.

Why are you worried about that?

It just seems like it might use some energy.
And I just wonder about any EM fields that are generated by the car and key sending messages to each other.

Over here in the Netherlands there are only two versions of the car. The Standard Edition (the one I got) and the Business Edition. The Business Edition has these extra's: Nav, SS/SE, fog lights (front), Bluetooth, 9 speaker JBL system.

Otherwise the cars are the same: automatic climate control, cruise control, thousands of airbags (well, perhaps a little less), windscreen wiper on rearwindow, hyperdrive, etc. etc.

The difference in cost is EUR 3700 or so (~US$4500), the extra's to me are 'nice to haves' but not essential, and given the fact that the price of the Standard Edition was already a bit steep for me, I decided against going for a Business Edition with all the bells and whistles. :)

Basically when you drive them, you won't notice that much difference; except when you want to make a phone call or are lost. :)

Sure it uses enery and gives EM fields, but then so does the remote fob, or do you use the metal key to get in and out? The power useded by the SE is not a concern under normal usage and id way less than what you "waste" by using your radio or Tape/CD player.

The EM field has a range of a few feet and the fob ony replys when it gets a request.

If you work with a monitor, or use a mobile or hands free phone you would be exposed to a far higher EM field than from the Prius SE system.
