    Hmmm, picture didn't work.
So, did it seem that the guy was just trying to steal your tools, or was he going to use the tools to steal something else? My first thought was he might have then gone on to steal your car.
Anyways, you definitely did the right thing. Scary situation and I hope to never be in one like that. We don't have any guns.

Let me note that there is ALOT of junk in the garage that I did not draw in the drawing. He had to climb over a lawnmower and a wheelbarrow at to where he was standing......there are shelves in that little nook of the garage, that is where he was removing the tools.....

    UPDATED DRAWING.......still crappy.....

Another possibility is that he was looking for tools to break into the house.

This Bad Guy was caught with tools the easyist item to pawn... could he have been wanting to go into the house ? No one will ever know... ;)

You'll probably get sued for having wielded a firearm and inflicting permanant psychological damage on the perp, thus preventing him from performing his chosen occupation of burglar in the future. You might get sued for all of the future burglary income he has to now forego as a result of his psychological damage.

Hey, I'm sure there are more than a few ambulance-chasers out there that would take this case.

I am so glad you are safe, you had a weapon, you had taken a firearms course, and you kept a cool head. You did as you were trained. Great job. I was one of the first concealed firearms instructiors in Ky., when they first passed the carrying concealed weapons law. In Ky., one can carry a firearm, or any deadly inst., in plain view...it is just illegal to have it "concealed"...there are numorus exceptions.

In Ky., before you can "use" deadly force, you must be in "imminent" danger. If you shoot, wound or kill someone, you will be arrested, taken to jail, photographed, fingerprinted, etc. You will have the opportunity to hire an expensive lawyer...who will claim, for you, the defense of....self defense. If a jury of your peers believe you, you will go free.

It is a very personal choice to arm yourself. I, for one, am very happy you were armed.

In hindsight, this is an easy thing to say.

But, IMHO, if the outcome was different, the sentiment here might differ as well.

Incorrect. You shoot to stop, which means center of mass. There's no shooting off pinky toes but you don't aim at the head either. You aim center of mass i.e the center of the chest. That happens to be a pretty effective place to put a bullet. If they live, they live. If not, oh well.

I'm glad to hear that no firing was necessary and that no one was hurt. We had someone try to kick in our front door (as a joke, they were just stupid high school kids) about a month ago. Scared the hell out of us. I really wished that I had my 12 gauge loaded at that moment. With two little kids though, I don't wanna have loaded guns in the house.

Good job. It sounds like you handled the situation quite well. Glad to hear that you took the time to take a class. It may have saved a life or two.
