I need help with the choice of new 17" rims for my black Prius. I understand how important it is to keep the weight low to not affect milage too much. I´ve been looking at OZ rims because they seem to be good for my needs and here are three that I think will look nice.

First we have the OZ Ultraleggera that only weighs 16 lbs!

And then there´s the OZ Superturismo that weighs 20.7 lbs.

And finally we have the OZ 35th Anniversary that I think would match my black Prius very well. But I don´t know how much it weighs. I only know that the 18" weighs 29.1 lbs.

So, what do you think?! Which one should I get?

I would go with 16 lbs one. Remember, the tires will add more weight as well. The OEM tires are pretty light and if you upgrade to 195 or 205 for 17" rims, you'll be adding at least 2 to 5 more lbs per tire.

Another alternative is to go with the rims I have. They look great with the black Prius and they are 15 lbs only and see the pic in my profile. When I had the 17" rims and Nexen tires in the summer, I noticed the better handling right away. I also noticed it was harder to stay in stealth due to pretty heavy tires (rated 168 mph top speed).

:) All look nice to me - your choice as to "style."

ONE CAVEAT: Try to confirm that your TPMS sensors can be fitted to your choice of new wheels [Assuming you have the Tire Pressure Monitoring System with sensors inside the wheel at the base of the fill stem]. It's my understanding that if they can be and are successfully transferred to your new wheels, you will need to have a Toyota dealer register them to your onboard computer.

Yeah I´ve seen pics of your car before and it really looks good with black rims. I´ve got an really good offer for rims from OZ though, so it will be one of those. How much was your milage affected when you swapped to the 17"?

The packages in Sweden differs from yours...we don´t have the TPMS option here at all. But what buggers me most is that Toyota doesn´t offer Xenon as an option either...

I vote for the 16 pound Superlegerra. Nice wheel.

It went from 52 MPG to 48 MPG ... so it went down about 8%. Other than weight difference, my tires on 17" rims were 205 instead of 185 stock.

I keep looking at the Motegi Traklite 1.0 flat black 17x7" rims myself. They're only 14 lbs. Then add some Toyo Proxes 4 205/45R17 tires. Mmm...

Of course if I do that then I can't possibly ignore adding the TRD Sportivo and the Tom's braces as well. What's the point of having traction if your car folds in half before rolling over when you try to use it?

And then I go to my ATM to check my account balance and cry because I can't even afford a decal let alone unleashing the demon hiding in my Prius. :(   <_<

Time to buy another lotto ticket and dash my dreams once more...

Well, it seems like the Ultraleggera´s are only made with four-bolts in 17" so the choice was simple...I ordered the Superturismo. It´s gonna take a few weeks before I´ll get them. But right now it´s snowing outside so it feels quite ok ;)

You know, I've been thinking about this. The stock tires just plain suck as far as traction goes. They're not 'low energy' tires, but they might as well be for all the traction they get. I'd be willing to bet that any new tires, even of the same size, will result in a noticable MPG loss as long as they actually get traction. I think it's just simply the frictional coefficient that really kills you, not the size or weight. Improve traction, lose MPG. :(

Try the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus (or MXV4 S8). They're LRR tyres and have better dry and wet grip than the Integrity. The snow traction is adequate (marginal once you get past 50% treadwear) and ice is poor. I'm basing this on a 215/60R16 set on our Camry.

I think just wrapping the rims in a wet burlap sack would get better traction than the Integrity tires on the Prius. ;) But still, I don't think the Energy tires would suffice for me personally. I see far too much snow to settle for adequate-to-marginal. I need good all-seasons. I was scared a few times this winter and now the snow is supposed to be coming again here. I'm already darn tempted to buy some real tires even though I don't have the money for it.

But to add to that I'm also not convinced of the fairness of a comparison using 215mm wide tires when all I'd probably put on the stock rims would be 195s.

Do they sell Nokian tires in the U.S? I think I saw a thread somewhere on this forum about them. Nokian is well known as really really good tires here in Sweden, especially their winter tires. I have the Nokian WR, 205 mm wide and they work very well here in the snow we have right now...

(I got the 205´s instead of the 195´s because we don´t have much snow in central Stockholm during the winter...they use too much salt salt salt :( )

Please have a look at the 17's I put on my black prius. I think they are really top notch!

However the tires I picked (Conti Pro contact) really seem to really worsen my mileage.

I am helping my friend who just also bought a black Prius to find a set of rims & tires that WON'T WORSEN HIS MILEAGE.

He is looking for 17's or 18's - what would be a good LRR tire for this size. I am running 205/50/17's and I must say that these tires give amazing handling in the Rain, which is why I bought them.

Here in Vancouver the roads are wet more often then they are dry (honestly). The factory tires just wouldn't cut it for me and my safety requirements.

Shute. I didn't see this post and made a similar inquiry.

At any rate, I am considering putting some wheels that come standard on the Scion TC. They have 215/45-17 tires. Here is a pic of those particular wheels on a Prius almost identical to mine.

    [attachmentid=6731]

I don't remember for sure, but I think the wheel weight is about 20 per. Any thoughts? I have to admit that I'm a little apprehensive about new wheels, don't know why.

    Thanks!

Oh, nice choice on the Superturismos, fine looking rims!

Heres a pic of the Scion Tc wheels.

Thanks Homer, I think you made my decision for me. As much as I love the look, I'm not willing to risk a big drop in MPGs. But now you've got my interest in these Volks you mentioned. Do you have a link to these wheels? Many thanks again.

Only been a member for a full day, and I love this site already!
