Ford to Market Giant, Hummer Dwarfing Pickup

    The new CXT, short for commercial extreme truck and built from the same platform as the heavy truck maker's typical tow truck or cement mixer, will be sold starting this week by Navistar's International Truck & Engine subsidiary.

    At 258 inches, or 21-1/2 feet long, the CXT's about 4-1/2 feet longer than the new Hummer H2 pickup, and about 2 inches longer than the F-350 Crew Cab. But it really towers over what's on the road now is in height, at 108 inches, or 11 feet, a foot above a basketball rim and more than two feet taller than the Hummer or the F-350.

    The price for the CXT ranges from about $93,000 to $115,000 fully loaded, with such creature comforts as a DVD player and leather upholstery.

    Buyers will also have to have a fair amount of money to fill it up -- it's projected to get between 6 and 10 miles per gallon of diesel fuel.

    The vehicle weighs about seven tons empty and can carry another six tons in its truck bed.

    Guesses as to what the statement is? How about:

    "I'm rich and enjoy giving my money to Navistar and the oil companies!"

    "I have nothing better to do with my vast sums of cash!"

    "This truck is my (naughty bits) substitute!"

    Oh for the love of god... WHY does anyone need this?!?! The only reason I can see for someone driving this thing is to put it to good use in construction along with cement trucks and dump trucks, et al. 99% of people don't need the Hummer either, so why make something bigger? What an insane waste of money and resources (both to the buyer and to Ford). I hope it bombs.

    I'm sure any joe schmoe will be able to buy one without having to get a class "C" licensce like with a real big rig. First person to snap a picture of their Prius next to one gets all my points.

    unfortunately, i know people who would snap this up just for the ride height...

    yes thats right, for the ride height. never mind the 6 mpg (or is that too optimistic?) or never being able to park in a supermarket parking lot...

    in many areas of Olympia where view property exists, the owner would not be able to park this vehicle at his house. just as RV's are not allowed in many areas of town, this would be banned too simply because its too tall.

    by the way, just for accuracy's sake, the ridiculous height of this thing is 9 feet (108 inches) not 11 feet as mentioned in the initial post.

    either way, it's absurd, but 11 feet was just ludicrous so i had to read through the actual article...

    Remember if that is the EPA estimate, downgrade it by 15%... Oops, at 6 mpg you would hardly notice the difference.

    I saw this in today's USA Today. I was looking to see if the article about the Prius was in there and found this instead. Can you say, "extreme difference"?

    I beg to differ. They will park in the supermarket parking lot taking up at least two spaces, if not more. People who buy vehicles like these for personal use don't care how they inconvenience other people.

    I cut/pasted the original post, so it originally said 11 Feet.

    Note that my cut/paste also said "A foot above a basketball rim" and now it says " A foot below a basketball rim".

    It has apparently been edited.

    Someone with the ability to perform division was evidently able to eventually come up with the right number of feet represented by 108 inches.

    Note that the Date Tag on the Article is now 3:07 PM EDT which is after I posted it. And no, I don't have a time machine.

    But, maybe 11 feet is for the Diesel, including the Smokestacks :)

    actually, what probably happened was that they sent some male reporter to cover the story who was so excited about the whole thing that he (well, i won't say what i was gonna say because there are girls on priuschat...)

    but anyway he got so excited about the SIZE of this truck that he made the technical error. after all, SIZE is what stuff like this is about, anyway, isn't it?
