...When the annual car edition of Consumer Reports arrives and you only skim everything but the bits that mention Prii...especially the bit that says, based on their surveys, the Prius ranks highest (92%) among those who say they would buy this car again...and you go around hooting and being smugger than usual. (Next car in list was the 'vette, at 89%.)

Instead of complaining about the horrible traffic, you're gloating over the great gas milage you're getting.

    Super-smug EV driver alert!

    [smug]

You know you're a seasoned EV driver when....

    - You need gas money and a few quarters will do the job.
(You need no money for gas because you generate your own fuel via the sun on the garage roof)

    - You get aggravated at another driver for going slow because you just passed him in "stealth mode".
(You pass other drivers going FAST in stealth mode)

    - You get stoked when you run an errand and the gas engine never starts.
(You are bored because there's no gas engine to avoid starting.)

    - You try to beat your record of how fast you can go in EV mode before the gas engine starts. (46 fior me)
(You drive 80mph, and STILL can't burn any gasoline)

    - You try to beat your average MPG every time you drive.
(Still getting zero MPG, and it'll never improve).

    [/smug]

That's why I prefer the lowly C172, 120 KIAS, and 10gph. Still worse than the Prius.

Every time I'm done flying, I have to get back into my Prius and be thankful that something I drive is fuel efficient.

Funny thing is I do get annoy when I get into my wife's '02, and:

    * I have to use the key to open and start the car
    * The A/C kicks the engine on at a signal, dropping MPG into the 30's.

You know you're seasoned though when your MPG drops into the 40's in the winter and you call it horrible.

Let's see 402 gallons - round it off to 2,400 lbs. - in a Prius... bottomed out springs and tires about to burst. Oh hell, we'll be nice and put the fuel in a trailer. Then squish put 6 adults with overnight luggage in the cabin. What kind of gas mielage would the Prius get pulling a load like that at nearly 300 mph?

It's all a matter of perspective.

The PC-12 gets about 6 mpg. There are vehicles on the highway today getting mileage like that at 1/5 the speed. As mentioned, among airplanes in its class - the cabin class twins and small biz jets - the PC-12 is enviably fuel efficient. The TBM700 is faster on similar fuel flow - but it has to get where it's going faster because it doesn't have a lavatory. :)

You are abolutely right on the perspective standpoint. Well said.

Nice one on the TBM700! :D

    You know you're a seasoned Prius driver when . . .

You opt to take the second turn, even though it will cause you to drive a little further to reach your final destination. You do this because you know you can easily coast to that second turn rather than wasting all that momentum braking for the first turn.

[I did just that today! Then I thought, 'yep, I'm a seasoned Prius driver.' I would have never done that in any other car. ;) ]

...you drive your girlfriend's car home from the body shop and on the way down the hill near your house, you instinctively take your foot off the gas and look in the direction of the display to see if you're up to 100 mpg. Oddly enough, the Saturn had nothing in that location at all.

You know your a seasoned Prius owner when

you load both of your arms with groceries and go to your door and realize you keys are in your pocket.

More fun when it is raining, trying to keep packages off the ground.

...when you pull off to the side of the road and wait for a semi to pass so you can draft.

I think the newest 747's blow that away ... if fully loaded the can do around 12mpg per person!

In hindsight, you are correct. I believe my reply to you was from the remark -
    - and I made a snap reaction to that as one of those "smug" statements. For that, I apologize.

    P.S. I still want one!! :D

Haven't pulled off, but have slowed down to get behind a semi (you don't have to be drafting all that close to get a positive effect).

    A couple more:

You get annoyed when you brake while riding a bicycle and realize it doesn't have regenerative brakes!
(this one hit me last summer)

Your most important concern is not how long it takes to commute, but playing the game of how good of MPG you get while commuting, and you can't remember when that change happened.
