    Hey Guys,

I just bought a 2007 base model Prius. I didnt' need all the fancy upgrades, but I do my my sound system I had prior. After doing some light searching, I've surmised that in order to improve the bass, I need a 'woofer? I'd hate to go through all that crap again, and in fact I refuse. I wanted to just replace the factory speakers (non jbl) and have a noticable difference. My experience with just replacing the factory speakers with aftermarket is that you lose the bass due to frequency response. Any suggestions?

PS - I did search, but I didn't find anything that answered my questions... and perhaps I'm asking something stupid...

First, welcome to PriusChat. You'll find a lot of good info and many helpful members here. Thanks, by the way, for using the search feature to try to get your answer first. Many newbies just start posting questions without searching, even though the questions may have been asked and answered dozens of times. And no, your question is not stupid.

One option I've heard of for a Prius subwoofer is the Bazooka. See this for more. I don't know anyone that's actually installed it, so I can't attest to anything more. Good luck.

Bazooka tubes (among some other brands) are powered subwoofers, so therefore don't require installing an amp to make them work. It's a quick and easy solution--and I think (not sure, though) that they can be hooked up to a factory radio.

The one problem with a Bazooka tube (or any subwoofer, for that matter) is that they take up space. The tube takes up less space than a trunk-sized sub box does, but still, it takes up space.

If I were you, I'd go to your neighborhood car stereo joint (either big box or mom & pop) and talk to them about what you want.

My '06 package #6, with the six speaker system and in dash changer, has plenty of sound and bass for me, but I don't like terribly loud music. (Unless some random song that I haven't heard in 20 years comes on the radio, then I must blast!)

    Hope this helps.

From the sounds of it you're satisfied with the base you're getting right now correct? If you are then I'd suggest replacing the front speakers only to get your mids and highs and then leave the back factory speakers in to give you the background base you want. It'd probably be the cheapest and easiest solution for you. The Infinity Kappas everybody talks about on this website gives excellent highs and very good mids so leave in the back factory speakers and you'll get the lows. In my opinion the base in the factory system is more than loud enough, although it's pretty crappy quality base....

Actually, I'm not that satisfied with the factory system. I actually think the mids and highs aren't terrible, but lows are very lacking. Mind you - I've had about 1000-1200w systems in my car since I was 16 (I'm now 25)...

I do have a realistic view on what I want, but I REALLY do not want to run wires or do anything along those lines. I just want simple stock replacement speakers that will deliver a better range and depth.

    Thanks!

You need to go out and find a powered subwoofer. I installed the Kenwood w00x. Very simple install and amazing results. If you only make one audio upgrade, this should be it. While the w00x is not longer available, Kenwood has released smaller and better units since.

If you've had 1,000-1,200 watt systems since you were 16, then you're probably used to much better sound then you can expect from just a factory speaker upgrade. I was in the same boat as you when I got my Prius.....woefully disapponted in the sound the factory system delivers (I've also had hi-end systems in all my vehicles since I was 16).
I suggest a staged approach. Start with replacing the factory speakers with good ones (components up front & coaxials in the rear). Then add an amp....then a subwoofer.
I went one step further & added a processor (eq/cross-over/line driver).
There are several of us posters here on PriusChat that have done lots in our cars and can point you in the right direction.
Several have put a sub in a custom fiberglass enclosure in the cubby hole behind the right-rear tire well (holds a 10" sub nicely). This route has minimal footprint with impressive results (sound-wise).
Keep poking around on this site & you'll find a wealth of info.
    Good Luck!

Thanks guys. I'm actually pretty impressed with what you guys have been saying about the bazooka tube. It seems sufficient for what I'm looking for, and it's easily removable. I'm pretty sure I will replace the factory speakers, add a DICE unit, get a bazooka tube, and tint the windows. Then I think I'll be done modding.
