Hi. I'd like to buy an '07 Prius, but it's at the outer edge of what I can afford. Anyone know what's in a base model that doesn't have any packages? (The things I'd like: CD player, Smart Key, backup camera.) Thanks.

Welcome to the site. Just because Toyota lists a base model and many option levels doesn't mean they will build and ship them all to your area.

For example, there were 8 packages for 2006. I'm not sure if Package 1 was the base model. In NJ Toyota offered Packages 3, 5, 7, and 8 only. If you wanted a different package you would have to buy the car in a state supplied by a different region.

When you go to Toyota's website and key your zip code only the models available will be listed when you try to build your car.

Perhaps a used 2006 or 2005 at the right price might be more suitable. Several members have bought used cars and have been just as happy as those who bought new. Good luck in your quest.

    Welcome!
In order to have Smart Key and the backup camera you have to get Package 1. Why don't you check the used ones listed for sale in the private sales section of this site? That may be the lowest priced option for you... Good luck, and keep us posted!

When I was shopping for my car, I did see a 2007 Prius which did not have any of the packages. It does have a CD player, but does not have the Smart Key (it has a key fob that you insert into the dash) and does not have the backup camera. MSRP on that car was $22,900 something. It was at Folsom Lake Toyota (Sac, CA area). I would have bought the car, but my GF talked me into getting the leather seats (Package #6)

I had been wondering how some were getting the real cool accessories like the Flux Capacitor, Plug in Option and so on. Now I wish I had started plugging in all the zip codes to find that Flux Capacitor option.

Greetings Seattlite! You are just up the Sound from me! I bought the base model back in 2005 from Puyallup Toyota. It was $21,000 something then and I had to wait 3 months for delivery. They probably have some on the lot for sale now. If you wanted to wait, you could probably get the package you want.

Even though the base model does not have the camera or magic smart key, I'm happy with it. It's not a problem for me to see out the lower rear window.

And don't let that news story about the car crashing into the mini-mart distract you from your purchase. The story sounds very suspicious.

These are great cars and I have not had any problem with mine. In fact I drove it to Phoenix just 2 days after I got it and my wife drove it around the Phoeniz area for 3 months in the summer heat with no problems.

    Thanks for the advice!
Funny ... I'm listening to the evening news out of one ear tonight while trying to decide whether to get a Prius. The anchor starts talking about rising gas prices, so I think, "Yep, it's a sign, I need to get one now." The next topic on the news: this Prius that went rocketing into a gas station and exploded in flames! (Maybe it wasn't the car's fault. Maybe the guy hit the gas instead of the brakes.) - khigginson

In the process of getting our 2006 we went looking for a 'no package' Prius. I had seen one with my own eyes at a dealer in Missouri so I knew they made it. That one didn't even have floor mats. Nuthin. I was told by several sales people after that, at different dealers here in Michigan, that Toyota didn't make a 'no package' car. You *had* to get at least pakage 1 (assuming it was available in your area...as per a previous post). Since I had seen one, I persevered. I finally found a sales rep who would look furhter than his nose and he ordered one. It was going to take some months to come. A package 2 model came in at another dealer, who also had our name on a list, and we got impatient and bought it. 2006 pkg 2 includes smart key and a fancier stereo (that plays MP3 files - I didn't know what an MP 3 file was at the time).

Turns out we really like the smart key, and now I have nice. long CDs full of MP3 files. The expensive floor mats are nice too, but pricey. But, unless things have changed in 2007, you may have to push a bit to get a zero package car. But that smart key is really nice...

While we were shopping for our Prius here in Tulsa, I saw one completely base model with nothing extra, so they do exist, but are probably few and far between. It seems that buying a Prius or any Toyota is sort of a compromise. You just have to find one that you like and you end up with some stuf that you wanted and some stuf that you didn't necessarily want, and the packages vary by the region.

The end result is good. I love my new Prius.

I have a 2006 Prius with package one. It has a CD player, but no Smart Key or backup camera. If you have a membership to Sam's Club you can get $800.00 off the price of the car. All you have to do is call to Sam's Club and give them your membership number. If you don't have a membership you may want to consider buying one for $35 to save a considerable sum on your new car.

If you want bells and whistles it's going to cost you. Unfortunately, Toyota builds their cars with packages. I prefer the pick & choose option method. If you go to www.carsdirect.com that site allows you to see all models & "build" your car to get an omline price. try it, it's free. I'm sure you'll find the best way to afford a Prius. Good luck.

Over the life of the car, a few hundred $$$ isn't that big of a deal. If its still too much, look for used. With the gas going up again, you better look fast, because even used prices may be creeping up too. Gas is already over $3 in parts of LA. I'm not sure where the tax credits now stand, but they might make up the difference of getting a new one, and don't apply to used cars.

I have a base model and am happy with it. I s pushing my budget to get a prius; the base model has a standard cd player, auto climate control, power mirrors and door locks. No smart key you have to put the key in and out of the little lot to start the car. No back up camera. No navigation but I got the tom tom 510 or something like that and love it. I love my Prius. I don’t know what will be available in 8 years but I would buy another prius if that was the best option out there.

I ended up buying a new car even though I initially plannned to buy a used one. In our area, the asking prices of used cars are almost as much as new, and with the tax credit it was really a wash cost wise between a used car with 20K miles and a new one with no miles. The Federal Tax credit is $1575 until March 31, then it drops by half to $787.50.

My wife and I bought a base 2007 Prius back in October and we couldn't be happier. Sure it doesn't have the fancy backup camera or the smart key, but we don't feel we need any of that. The base 07 has so many standard features, I wouldn't recommend a used Prius as you get more for your money buying new, in my opinion. We paid just a little over $24k for it.

I got one!!! :) It turned out to be cheaper to buy new, with the tax credit and low interest rate, than to buy a used Prius with low mileage. So I got an '07 base model (which is really package 1), seaside pearl. So far, love it! I was really impressed with the way you all responded quickly to give advice. Thanks for the help. - Kris

Welcome to the Wonderful world of Prius Driving, Kris! You'll find the more you drive your new car the more you'll love it. We've had ours since Oct last year and I just love it more and more. And around the Seattle area we seem to see dozens every time we drive somewhere.

    Huh?

Base is base. Package 1 is package 1. They're different.

When I was initially trying to get a package #1 many of the dealers I spoke with were a bit loose with their terminology. When I specifically asked for packag number one I got replies such as "Toyota isn't shipping base models to Northern California". A few dealers that had the actual base model (as opposed to package #1) in stock usually referred to it as "package-less" or as package #0.
