Anyone out there *regret* buying a Prius?

My only mistake was not ordering it in January 04

 

Waiting for our second. Guess we have no regrets. And Tony, because of my frustrations with some people's lack of interest, I am afraid that I am guilty of trying to shove it on unsuspecting friends and aquaintences at times!!!

 

Jc; not sure what those initials stand for but I'll call you ,Sir, just in case... gosh... we've been guilty of trying to sell the Prius to everyone who will listen since April and we don't even own one...yet*

 

Once in a while. It is a great car and I love it and am extremly happy with it but, I hardly drive it. I take metro to work and occasionaly drive it to the station ( 2-3 miles) and go on some trips on wekends.More trips these days as the Prius is new( 1 1/2 months old). With so little driving there aren't any considerable savings . I had a 1998 Chrysler Sebring convertible in excellent condition, long payed off that I traded in. I have been seriously considering selling the Prius and getting my Sebring back( the dealer still hasn't sold it) but I love the Prius too much even though I can reduse my debt by around $ 20,000 by doing so....I know in a year or two there will be a lot of other hybrids and the Prius will probably have no wait list( or a very small one) and could probably be purchased for some discount or used when I need a new car.

 

Love my Prius... like most others, I enjoy talking about it... was at the barbers the other day... great place to talk Prii as he has one also.. there was a guy in the chair when I walked in... the barber and I started telling Prius stories... when the guy got out of the chair he wanted to sit in the Prius.. I think he was off to buy one, when he left..

nope no regrets! if i could afford to get another one i would! :mrgreen: i love driving, and love driving even more since i got my prius!

 

:mrgreen: In reply to the question of regrets from owning a prius..... let me say im so mad that i dont get to drive it more than i do!!! My girlfriend has this thing about hitting buttons and loves the car (might be why she keeps me around) We talk about getting another prius when her tacoma gets paid off. I can see it now........ ill get the 04 she will get the new one and the truck will sit. Poor little truck but in closing i have no regrets on the purchase and im happy to get rid of the 01 chrysler seabring POS (4cyl and got 12-18 mpg avg) GIRLFRIEND IS CRYING FOR "" HER "" PRIUS :cussing: AND

 

Maybe that has more to do with where you live, or maybe it’s that “come talk to me I’m nuts†look you give that scares them off. :crazyeyes:

This last weekend I was at the Napa Wine and Crafts Fair. I had on my Prius “Haul ecologically friendly butt†tee shirt and had about seven people either push the “start†button on the back or ask what I thought about my car. I told them, “I think my car is on a boat halfway between Japan and here by now and for now I am only a poser, but everything I have read online at priuschat is very positive.â€

It’s either that laid back California style, or maybe the booze talking. . . one or the other . . . or maybe both . . . you never know with California.

My only regret is that my wife didn’t total our other car earlier!

Only one regret, that's the inability to fit a towbar. Only want a bar to tow a small trailer, not a caravan. I've looked at the various brackets for carrying bikes and they can be modified to take a ball but Toyota won't honour their warranties if the mod is done.

In Europe this lack of a towbar is a problem to a small section of drivers, I know several people who've turned away from the Prius because of it, also at least one organisation who wanted about 20 Prius's (or is it Prii?) because of this deficiency.

In a region where one car families is common there seems little point in buying a Prius, with it's savings in tax, petrol emmisions etc, only to then buy a second car for the trailer.

Otherwise a great car in all respects.

I was pondering this as I was sitting in traffic the other day, with cars idleing all around me...

I looked at BMWs, Audis, Infinitis, Mercedes...

And I laughed. There is not ONE SINGLE CAR ON THE ROAD that I would trade my Prius for.

No regrets. We did our research prior to buying so that we clearly understood what we were getting into... the good and the bad. The car has exceeded our expectations. Why? Because in addition to having the features and qualities we expected prior to purchase, we've discovered that it's really fun to drive. That's an added bonus that we weren't expecting.

We were worried that the lack of headroom in the back seat for people over 6 feet tall would be a problem. It's not. I guess most people we know are short enough not to hit the roof.

We were really worried about fuel consumption, as many folks on the Canadian yahoo group report averages between 5 and 6 litres per 100 km. We weren't sure that we could live with numbers that high. Fortunately, we don't have to. We're getting between 4.5 and 4.7 litres per 100 km and are quite happy with that.

The only surprise is that the cargo space is less than we thought. Although on paper it looks like it has more space than our old Mazda, in practice we have to fold the seats down much more often. This isn't a big deal, but if we ever have kids, we'll need a roof rack.

 

Does Toyota specifically say the warranty is void if you tow with it? I think the U.S. owner's manual only says it is "not recommended". Of course, I don't know if by "small trailer, not a caravan" you mean a little cargo trailer which including its load may weigh 150 kg or a little pop-up camping trailer which would weigh a lot more. Even the little pop-up campers would likely be too heavy for a "towing not recommended" car.

Certainly a problem. Is is possible to rent a towing vehicle? I'm sure the practicality of this idea depends on how often one wants to use the trailer.

 

Regrets??? Are you kidding??? Not a one!!!

Like everyone, there's a few things I'd like different about the car, but buying it was absolutely the right decision.

However, I'll probably trade it in when the next major model revision comes along, in 5 or 6 (?) years, as I expect great technological advances during that time.

 

Nope! I only hope that I can get a good price for it when I buy a Diesel electric hybrid, in early 2007 or so.

 

I have installed the receiver (towbar) from coastaletech as a means of carrying my mountain bike... so it will fit a towbar. I think the max tounge weight of the coastaletech receiver is 250lbs but i wouldn't venture to put that much weight on it. I would say you could probably tow a very lightweight trailer but I wouldn't go towing boats or campers.

No relation to coastaletech, just a happy customer.

 

No, at least not after just over to weeks of ownership. Right now the Prius is at the dealer for an oil change and I'm already missing it.

Agreed! I'm an electrogeek who always looked upon cars as a necessary evil, and the Prius smugness bug has got me also.
