I was listening to NPR yesterday (yeah, I know, left-wing propaganda) and the interviewer was talking to a guy who started a wiki project called "Conservapedia" as an alternative to Wikipedia, which he claimed had a "liberal bias" (right, just like the mainstream media  ). I looked this up, and the guy who founded it, Andrew Schlafly, is the son of right-wing hatemonger Phyllis Schlafly. He alleges that the articles in Wikipedia have an anti-Christian and anti-American bias.
Having referred to Wikipedia on numerous occassions (not for scientific research articles, of course, but for general info) I have found it to be generally reliable and factual, and pretty much unbiased (although on topics on say, artists or musicians, a little of the writer's subjectively might seep in. But you can sort out the opinions from factual information). But, as Stephen Colbert is fond of saying, facts have a well-know "liberal bias."
I heard something so funny in the NPR story that I had to look it up. If you go to Wikipedia and look up "kangaroo", you'll find a lot of information on taxonomy, the kangaroo's habits, diet, physiology, etc,; as well as a list of four prehistoric kangaroo genera. Look up the same topic on Conservapedia and you'll see much less general information (so I would not recommend Conservapedia as a resource for kids writing school reports), and the following:

Well, it least they mention evolution- apparently, they give it the same degree of authority as the aboriginal "dreamtime".

Despite the name of this site, I would guess that most conservatives would not identify with the belief that kangaroos originated on Noah's Ark. But for a few of our right-wing friends here that love to cut-and-paste, I am sure that Conservapedia will be a valuable resource. :)

That site might be even a more amusing read than the recent posts by Daron against gay marriage!

See, how lame.. They think Wikipedia is biased, so instead of creating a NON BIASED wiki.. they create an extreme right bias.

This is what is wrong with a lot of America.

You want amusement- look up Conservapedia's article on George W. Bush:

"Exxon Mobile" [sic]- I think they meant ExxonMobil "posted the largest profit of any company in a signle [sic] year"- that's a sign the economy has improved? Someone actually wrote that with a straight face?
And why is it that the right-wingers can't spell or get names right?

I'm thinking that article may have been written by one of the few members of the Bush fan club here on the site...

I had the same thought- both the convoluted thinking and the sloppy spelling and grammar seemed familiar

    This is highly amusing!

I'm starting to wonder if someone from the left didn't mock this site up to display the rediculous ideas often presented by the extreme right. I just have a hard time believing someone would be that stupid to right the above copy/paste material.

I can certainly understand why a rational person might think so (sort of a wiki version of "The Colbert Report"?). I might think so also, had I not actually heard this guy Andrew Schlafly talk about it on NPR yesterday. He's actually serious.
And there is a Wikipedia entry (for those who don't consider Wikipedia too "left-wing" to look at) on Conservapedia. In the interest of fairness, here's a link to Conservapedia's entry for Wikipedia, where you can read the "evidence" of Wikipedia's alleged liberal bias; for instance, "A Wikipedia entry falsely stated that Rutgers was once invited to join the Ivy League."

I noticed that users are immediately greeted to the restrictions:

"Minors under 16 years use this site. Posting of obscenity here is punishable by up to 10 years in jail under 18 USC § 1470. Vandalism is punishable up to 10 years in jail per 18 USC § 1030. We will trace your IP address if necessary."

I wonder if donations to this site are not only tax deferred but also buy you absolution ;)

That's why I haven't posted anything on Conservapedia. My first post would begin with, "You must be out of your f#$king minds!"

Wow, and the Conservapedia site looks identical to the Wiki site. Here's a link to Wiki's definition of conservapedia, just so you can see both sides. The identical formatting makes it seem like Conservapedia is a descendent of Wiki. or is that too left wing? would it be better if I said that Conservapedia and Wikipedia both are descendents from Noah's Ark? or that Conservapedia was generated by god (aka this Schlafly fellow)? But Wiki makes sure to state that it is not related, but rather that Conservapedia uses Wikipedia's free software Wikimedia.

Is "yer" a Biblical term? It just sounds redneck to me...

Way to contribute to bipartisianism. This will certainly serve to better our nation.

Notice how it's always liberal bias that's a "problem", not bias itself. Then again, the rightward tilt long ago surpassed mere bias and has been for some time totally capsized!

Well, we all know the truth has a natural liberal bias.

I've been critical of Wikipedia in the past, but I've grown to give it some respect. It is at least self correcting, so the more people who contribute to it, the more chance you have of it being fair. Its a mistake to segment every aspect of our lives into "liberal", "conservative", "faithful", "unbelief", etc.

Oh sweet irony! It is clearly lost on the founder of conservapedia. How does one fight bias with a page whose very name implies, nay confirms, bias. Conservapedia is a veritable wealth of comic relief. I am convinced that it is edited by middle school children, and its authors often cite a homeschooling IDeist book in its "science" topics.

My question is: How can we be expected to satirize this? It is becoming increasingly difficult to discern parody from reality. This nonsense has had me chuckling for weeks now, as it has been a steady topic of conversation at Pharyngula (thanks Alric, this blog is truly a must read). :D
