Following the 1994 Northridge Earthquake we had some serious damage to our telephone system and we ended up with spaghetti of telephone wires that corresponded to 24 phone numbers.

The telephone technician dispatched to re-connect them used some “magic phone number†that when called would get an automated reply with the actual phone number of that specific wire pair.

I had made a note of that “magic number†but, after all these years, can not locate it and I have to identify a bunch of phone lines in a dusty attic.

Does anybody know of this “magic†number?

    Thanks

Found it on a Telephony Forum :) :)

    AND The Number is: 1010 732 1770 988 9664

I don't know the "magic number," but my suggestion would be to phone your own cell phone from each wire pair you need to identify. Your caller ID will tell you what number you called from.

Thanks & that was my first thought except that all the numbers in the building have blocked caller ID :(

Dialing *82 before the actual number (after the 9, if you are calling from a Centrex system) will usually unblock the caller ID.

Thanks; I forgot to mention that the building is in att/cingular blind spot and, yes, all cell phones nearby are on cingular. (And please, stop laughing....) Oh and it does not help that I have to squeeze to a pretzel form to get in that dirty, semi dark, spidery, hot spot. ( I said PLEASE, stop laughing).
