I noticed that the spell checker button on this site does not seem to work.

The interesting thing is that I am also on Renntech.org where they seem to use the same chat software and their spell checker works.

Here is the deal: sometime back when I was posting on Renntech, I used the spell checker and when I did it downloaded a piece of software onto my machine called: ieSpell. That software now works nicely on both Renntech and Priuschat.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you exactly how i did it - it was a while back... and you have to post a reply and apply the checker to download / activate the software.

By the way, the software does not work here by pressing the ABC button. Rather, you highlight the text you want to spell check and RIGHT click mouse - and voilà, the option exists to spell check.

Maybe the moderator can fix this spell checker, or at least point us to ieSpell. I find it very convenient.

By any chance are you using Firefox as a browser. The 2.x versions of Firefox have spell checking built in. If you misspell a word, a little red squiggly line appears under it and then if you right click the word then suggested words pop up for you to choose from.

Boy that would be great to have the spell checker work. I did not notice it before. I am the worlds worst speller. We just purchased a new computer with MS Vista. Had a hard time finding the spell checker with Word in Vista.

Unfortunately it isn't just spelling that sometimes makes me cringe  when reading posts. Just using the "wrong" word bu misspelling won't be caught by a spellchecker. Such as

    your - you're
    its - it's
    there - their

The funniest of these types of errors was the 7th grade science paper about an "insect" that consistently used "incest" all the way through. My teacher friend almost had a stroke from laughing so hard when she read it!

 It really seems that in the last generation or two, spelling and grammar have been eliminated from school curriculums. Combine that with carelessness and the appearance is that we deal with an uneducated group of forum members. Capitalization and sentence structure are other errors. It seems someone using all lower case or all CAPITALS is just being lazy. I usually just skip reading or responding to such poorly posted questions or comments.

break for brake is another of my all-time 'favorites.'

Personally, I can't stand the things. They're useless on 'worpos' - the wrong word, spelled correctly - and they force me to 'correct' my 'regional differences' and spell American instead of English.

To, dose ovus what's flunkeded grades cool ain't gonna use em anoway, and than it wont be so much fun makin laffs off all da carp. B)

    Spellbound, by Janet Minor

    I have a spelling checker,
    It came with my PC,
It plainly marks for my revue
    Mistakes I cannot sea.
I've run this poem threw it,
I'm sure your pleased too no,
Its letter perfect in its weigh,
    My checker told me sew.

Hey, back off on the public schools!

    1. Language is rapidly changing, due to instant messaging, text messaging, and all these other shorthands the kids use today. They won't bother spelling things out (in some cases it costs more), and so they don't practice the correct spelling. Therefore, much as we might cringe, someday these shorthands (how RU?) might be considered not only acceptable, but correct.

    2. This change is always going on, it has simply accelerated. After all, when did a "donut" lose the "dough"?

    3. Spell-checker. If you've got it, why learn to spell?

    4. If schools HAVE cut back on grammar/spelling (although every school I've taught in lately teaches both every day), it is due to NCLB and ridiculous state and federal testing requirements in math and science.

My suggestion is to get Firefox 2.x
It's a great browser and much more secure than IE. I think I even read a few years ago that the Department of Homeland Security will not allow the use of IE and instead uses Firefox. The spell check on Firefox has made my life much easier. I'm also one of the bad speller. This prevents me from having to rely on the spell check being built into the website I go to because it travels with my browser.

Personally, I think learning to spell is a very important skill. You cannot always rely on spell check. When I stand in front of a class teaching, I don't have spell check to help me out. It does not make you look very smart if you cannot spell while teaching, although it may be comical at times. :)

I sure hope that the internet lexicon and short hand does NOT become a part of the accepted language. I sometimes will get emails from students that want information about entering the graduate program I am in. They will sometimes write things like, "Ur input is gr8ly appreciated". This bugs the heck out of me and it does not make the person look like a good communicator. Although, this may come as a surprise to some, but in science, communication is essential. You might think that in science, knowledge and research skills are all that is important, but in fact, if you cannot disseminate that knowledge it does not benefit anyone and you might as well be sitting on your own thumbs.

It's probably a bit like the overuse of calculators in primary education. Doing math out by hand gives kids an intuition about numbers and what makes sense. It seems to me that when kids rely on calculators to "give them the answer" they just accept whatever numbers the bloody thing spits back to them. They don't seem to have a sense for whether the numbers make any sense. It's easy to accidentally hit the / key when you meant to hit *. If you don't have any intuition for numbers then you're not going to realize that you goofed. Calculators are great and are a massive time saver but they're not a crutch. When they're used that way they're a huge disservice to the students.

IESpell works with Internet Explorer and can be found at http://www.iespell.com/

As other have suggested, version 2 of Firefox has built-in spell checking. I highly recommend it, especially running on a linux system.

**** OK, this is a BUMP rather than a new topic on an old subject ***

The PriusChat spell checker still doesn't work . . . I confirmed by also using Safari.

    Thankfully Firefox 2's still works . . . GREAT! :D
I got tired of seeing "Prius" and "PriusChat" marked as misspellings . . . so I right-clicked on the words and added them to the dictionary. Now I don't have to be annoyed with those "misspellings" any longer.

I'm just wondering if the Invision Power Board v2.1.x software which Danny and the gang has running the PriusChat site has the SpellCheck module installed . . . and if "Prius" would be marked as a misspelling if it were running.

So far no replies from a Mod or Danny on this thread.

Shouldn't Firefox be mandatory for Prius owners?

I've tried firefox twice--still think that it is lame. For me slimbrowser which is an overlay on ie is best. I also use ieSpell which does a good job as a spell checker.

Unless I'm severely mistaken, the SpellCheck feature is not installed *but* the official IPB version requires the ieSpell plug-in anyway. Thus, for those using IE, I can't see how there would be much of a difference in terms of functionality. Not really certain, though......perhaps Danny or Evan or Tony have better info re this issue.
