Thought this was interesting. While there's always been a gaping hole in professional athletics for women, I had just never thought about the fact that referees and umpires were all men in men's sports. Oh well--another glass door/ceiling/whatever you want to call it being cracked (not broken yet, though).

I hope she kicks nice person and gets pulled into the regular season.

Doubly hard.........she'll be called a bitch (or hormonal) if she's firm or looses her temper, while a man would just be called assertive and driven. She'll also constantly have her judgment scrutinized, I'm sure.

There's actually one female official in the NBA right now. Seeing her officiate a game on TV was a little odd for me, but I got over the surprise quickly enough. It was actually remarkable to me for the fact that it didn't seem remarkable to the announcers; I don't think they ever pointed out that a woman was officiating the game; I suppose that's progress.

I was over at my parents' house on Saturday and my mother was watching women's college basketball. North Carolina's team had a woman coach. It takes time. This woman probably played ball in college before there was much notice of womens' teams. She probably coached in High School and then in college. She's waited her whole life, developing her skills to finally see women's basketball be recognized.

I remarked to my mother that it was a shame that this was a dead end for these girls. After college, it's not like they have much in the way of a professional woman's basketball team to be recruited to. No big endorsement deals or national leagues. It's not like they've got their own sports night on national TV.

It is about time these women who were talented players now step up to coach their own teams. (The other team that night had a male coach.)

So why not women umpires/officials? There are women sportscasters; there have been for years, albeit not many.

    Now...here's a question for you.

How many female Symphony Conductors have to seen/heard?

Pam Postema worked major league spring training in 1988 and was a professional umpire from Rookie to AAA baseball during the 1970s and 1980s.

I know there's at least a few in the US of major symphonies...I've seen one on something a few months ago. Can't remember the city or state. And googling the question, there have been others before. But you're right--that's odd that it's a boys club, too.

And there's lots of women basketball coaches for women's teams; Pat Summitt is the first that springs to mind. And TJ, you're right, the WNBA is out there for future basketball players. But that's about it, idn't it?

This article and subsequent discussion just made me think of all the jobs out there that we see on a daily basis that are 99.999999999% male. I can't think of any that are 99.99999999999999% female. There's a day care teacher at my son's school who is male. The guy that does my nails is a, ummm, guy. Nurses and telephone operators were traditionally female; not the case any more. It's just curious, that's all. I'm not condemning or promoting--just pondering.

I agree that it is progress.

I haven't followed basketball in some time, though, but it seems that the refs in basketball are not quite paid as much attention to as umps in baseball and refs in football. In football, they even refer to the refs by name during the game.

Do any of you all-sports fans agree? Or have they started doing that in basketball, too?
