Altimeter?

    I have found "Compas Mode" but is there any altimeter? Seems they have all the information????
    When you go from near sea level in Calfiornia to the mountains and then down to Vegas it is useful to know the altitude. Hubby had to use his Casio compass and altimeter watch (and that is not fun when HE is driving- waiting for it to change to the higher altitude). :wink: :wink:

    Any altimeter mode? Or is this just for the wish list?

    The ironic thing is in the diag screen, it states that with 4 or more active "birds" in the sky, it's resolving in 3D mode. However, the oversight of not including altitude does surprise me as well.

    GPS altitude is not too accurate. If I remember it right my old Garmin manual states the accuracy is about 30m (90ft), a lot worse than ordinary GPS coordinates.

    To get a better accuracy you would need to measure air pressure, and calibrate it often.

    This is correct. The error in calculating altitude with GPS is about twice the error of latitude/longitude. Currently GPS is accurate to about +-15 feet for location, so altitude is about +-30 feet off. Still no reason not to include it.

    An altimeter would have been nice to have been included. I am used to having it on my laptop/GPS which I used to use (mostly for the geek factor). But it was essentially useless to me then, too. I live in South Florida. If I were 10 feet over sea level, it meant I was on an overpass or flyover lane. It would have been nice to be able to know what your actual elevation is (I know my dad's house is 8 feet, I don't know mine), but it becomes impractical for me with the error in GPS, and the consideration of just where in the car the receiver is mounted! heh...

    If you wish to find your altitude, I suggest that you go REALLY REALLY fast; when you stop for the police officer, just ask exactly this: " Do you have any idea how high I am?"

    You will find out.

    Brilliant!! Those oficers are so-o-o friendly. :-D

    Tell me, in small words and type slow because I'm not a fast reader, exactly why youraltitude is so important. I just don't get it.

    BTW, when you mark a spot in your "Personal Places" (whatever it's called) doesn't it provide altitude? I know it does Long/Lat. I figured that if it does, it might be a lame, though potential, workaround.
