Stick to one subject, one topic, one idea and you might get some good answers. But instead when you get a good answer to one question, you immediately jump to another subject. Gay marriage not going like you thought? lets try abortion. Oh wait, they have an argument for that? lets try Iraq. Oh, now lets get on a Nuclear Iran! You're all EVIL!

Welcome to PC and FHOP, D'lyse. I see you've met Dr. Berman, our resident broken record. You seem to be educated and willing to engage in rational debate. Unfortunately, you'd get better results talking to my food bowl. Dr. Berman isn't interested in a meeting of the minds. He's got his views and, well, if yours don't match his, then become one of THEM in the timeless US vs. THEM debate. Also, as you've already seen, any well thought out post will be accused of obfuscation.

Allow me, if you will, to shorten the pain and cut right to the chase.
    • You see evil as good and good as evil.
    • You obviously want Iran to go nuclear.
    • You hate America.
    • You might be anti-semitic, but we're not sure yet.
    • Clinton got a BJ in office.
    • Barack Obama's middle name is "Hussein".
    • Hillary Clinton may or may not have had plastic surgery.
    • Liberals are the cause of all the country's woes.
    • Nancy Pelosi went to Syria.
So, there you have it. A quick & dirty list of most of the talking points you'll get hit with. I've probably missed some. Maybe some of the old-timers can fill in the blanks. Print it out and leave it by your computer for future reference.

Oh, one other thing. You'll often see others refer to him by my name. Please don't be confused and think he & I share beliefs. We're polar opposites. He gets his undies in a bunch about Muslims having nukes. I, were I to wear them, would get mine in a bunch about cats having nukes.

I don't really aim to be a step ahead of or behind anyone. Your opinion of me will not and cannot diminish or improve me as a person. I am who I am. What's more, I didn't answer your question because I felt it was irrelevant to the discussion at hand. My argument had to do with human rights in the United States. Having said that...

I, for one, am wholeheartedly against nuclear proliferation, however how people go about ceasing that is not really something I can impact at this point in my life. This whole thing does remind me of a song ("Who's Next" by Tom Lehrer).

Not that it's any of your business, but...

I teach high school English. I don't impose my beliefs on my students nor do they impose theirs on me. That's not how my classroom works. We study the literature, have open classroom discussions (in which my opinions and thoughts are only voiced in as much as they pertain directly to the literature). The students may debate and make their own assertions without interference from me. During discussion, my role is as facilitator of open, polite classroom discussion based on the reading. My job is to encourage critical thinking skills, teach reading, writing, and literature, prepare my kids for college, and to ensure that my students can pass the required exams. I have a great group of hard-working kids with limitless potential, and I only hope that I can in some way foster that potential.

And for the record, I don't care whether or how you judge me. My life is my own. I am not your problem unless you make me your problem. And even then, I wasn't the one to make that decision. I do know that you are not my problem. I am amused at your sense of entitlement, though.

Thanks for the tip! I appreciate it. I have printed said list and epoxied it to my desk. Your list gave me real belly laughs. I look forward to reading more from you in the future if I manage to find the free time to pop on here occasionally -- teachers don't often have a lot time on our hands for fun stuff like political debate and baiting goons.

I, too, am unnerved about cats having nukes. I have two housecats, and they're far too clever to be trusted with nuclear bombs. I have limited their evil plots to the maiming of kibble bags and scheming to sneak into the backyard unattended. They're creative enough to keep busy with those two plots so far. If they run out of ideas, perhaps I'll let them start trying to figure out how to get into the linen closet.

Give it one more try - would you prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons? BTW - my mom taught English too.

Know what? I am not interested in discussing Iran with you. I engaged in a human rights debate with you on a web-board. I have said as much about Iran as I would like to say. It's off topic. I run a class of 30-odd students several times a day every week day. If I were as easily pulled off my subject as this, I wouldn't accomplish anything in class. Look me up when you're interested in having an intelligent, open-minded debate about human and/or civil rights in the United States.

I have also been advised (quite rightly, as you are proving at this moment) that whatever point I make and whatever support or evidence I have to support my assertions, you will dismiss me regardless. I'll have you know that I do not tolerate that behavior from my students, and I certainly won't put up with it on a voluntary basis.

    D'lyse--
Welcome to FHOP. As an almost-English teacher, it's great to see folks with commonalities on the board!

And I really liked your response to the doc. That's all you can do with him and one or two others...ignore, or try to get back on track.

    Again, welcome!

Our country although still a Democracy, where the majority rules, what would happen if ... there were more of them than us?

Actually, our country is a Federal Constitutional Republic. Here's a wiki article:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_states...nt_and_politics

This system of government allows majority rule but protects the rights of private citizens regardless of a majority decision.

I was specifically refering to your assertion that two adults should be prohibited from marrying each other if the majority decides that their genders are not right for each other. The right to marry is a basic human right. Homophobia is the fear (or by extension, the hatred) of homosexuals, and is a form of bigotry, along with racism and anti-semitism. Your vile, mealy-mouthed attempt to connect support for human rights with support for Saddam Hussein will fool nobody.

The right to marry is a basic human right, and in a republic, the majority does not have the right to deprive a minority of its basic human rights.

And BTW, I was lobbying the government to cut off support for Hussein when your precious Republicans were arming him, paying him, and supplying him with the chemicals to make poison gas.
