Not to beat a dead horse, but you should make sure two conditions are true before you even start conducting your experiments:

    1. Your headlights are on.
    2. The little brightness dial is in a position other than the top "notched" position.

Unless both these conditions are true, you will never be in night mode.

The more I'm reading, the more confused I'm getting.

Is Day Mode meant to be used in the day time (so the screen won't dim when the lights are on), or for something else?

Is Night Mode the default mode?

"Night Mode" (there is no such thing, it's "day mode off") is the default when you turn on the headlights. "Day mode" overrules this, handy when you use your headlights in not quite so dark conditions.

They were true (the 'Day Mode' button doesn't appear unless they are). By default, there is no difference between night mode and the day mode override--I had to change my brightness settings in order to see a difference.

Now if only the dash gauges were linked into this, it would be an uber-cool feature. As it stands, if I turn on my lights, and day mode, while the sun is still out, I can barely see the gauges with the dial in the top-most non-notched position. Thus, I need to move the gauge to the notched position even with day mode on.

    Auto-headlights FTW! Oh, well.
