Blue Tooth telephone connection

    I have had my 2004 Prius--fully loaded--for almost six months and I[m still trying to figure out what Blue Tooth is all about and how to hook it up. The Dealer said I had to find a service provider--which I did-Verizon, supplying a Motorola phone at considerable expense and the sp said Toyota would set it up for me. Toyota says "no" we don't do that--figure it out for yourself. I've tried to set it up using the Motoral manual but all I get is "No Devices Found". There's nothing I can find in the Toyota manual to doe it so---

    Maybe I misunderstood the purpose of Blue Tooth. I thought you could just set it up and the calls wold come through the same audio system as the "little lady" who gives navigation instructions. I don't want to wear a headset as that defeats the purpose of safe driving. Does anyone know what Blue Tooth is supposed to do and how to hook it up? Would appreciate if very much.     Terry,

    I picked up my Prius the other day and was looking through the manuals. This isn't listed in the owners manual for the car, but there is a section on setting up the Bluetooth phone in the navigation manual.

    Thanks Wacko. I forgot about the Navigation Manual. I pulled out in front of a van last month and had a "little" dent--the shop replaced left rear door and quarter panel at a cost of $4,500 whew--- Insurance paid all but $1,000 deductible but I will get surcharged for the next three years. The Prius was in the body shop for a month and am still trying to get all the contents back together. I will have to locate the Navigation Maual.
    Oh, by the way, have you had problems with the navigation screen? You can't read it in sunshine and it needs some kind of hood. My wife designed one that is ttemporatily working but it's tack and doesn't stick. I talked to the service rep at Torrance and she said Toyota is aware of the problem but has not solution.

    Here's a Handy Guide at John1701a's site. I think that will solve your problems. John's site has lots of other useful info too.

    Also, take a look at This Toyota PDF it should help you as well, even if it doesn't specifically address your particular phone (you didn't tell us which one you have).

    I'm having trouble keeping on line. I'm very green at chat things and I keep killing my replies. Anyhow, Thanks, doc, but I have to admit the 2004 Prius has been a disappointment. 1. The best I can do on mpg is 40 even driving very carefully. Of course, I'm driving short distances but not in traffic--three miles each way to my office--On a long trip I got 56.4 but haven't repeated it. 2. The navigation screeen is unreadable in bright sunlight and there is no "after market" hood for it that I can find. and 3. I can't seem to hook up the Blue Tooth, but maybe I'm expecting something that isn't there. I was under the impression t hat you could just hook it up and push the button on the steering wheel but apparently that's not the way it works. However, the 2004 has more zip than the 2001 and gets a tiny bit better mpg and there's lots of room in the back to carry things. I'm still hoping to work out the problems. I just discovered this forum and there are awful nice people on it.

    Sorry to hear you feel that way. You're in a minority and I have to think it may be something a little operator dependent. But then, if it were perfect that wouldn't even be a factor. I'll take a shot at some of your concerns.

    I have a 4 mile commute to my kids' daycare. I can usually maintain or even slightly improve my base mpg on the MFD. I maximize coasting and gliding and anticipate stops. "careful" driving can work against you unless you're driving in the most efficient manner for the Prius. Too slow of acceleration can be less efficient that too fast...the ideal is "dead banding" accelerating with no arrows going to the battery. It's tough, and slow from the stop, but faster as you accelerate.

    Although I too have experienced some difficulty with the screen in very direct light shining on it I've not found it that difficult, and it's not much of an issue most of the time b/c there's little on there I 'have' to see. Are you wearing polarized sunglasses? That can make it harder to see. Have you considered tinting the windows and adding a "brow" to the front windshield to cut the light? You should if that is that much of a 'disappointment' to you.

    Did you bother looking at the links I posted?? Have you tried connecting the phone using those instructions? I think this is either a problem with your specific phone or your specific effort to connect it is wrong. My phone works exactly as it should. I get in, start the car, and the car acknowledges Bluetooth connection. I push a button on the wheel to bring up the phone on the MFD and dial out. If a call comes in the radio mutes, I hit a button on the wheel to answer, and when done hit a button on the wheel to disconnect and the MFD automatically returns to the previous display. This is a great feature and works great. Your sales person is responsible for helping you understand how to get all this to work...go to him if the things I gave you links to don't help...but try those first before you blame the Prius.

    Hi Terry
    You mention that your bluetooth phone was a Motorola purchased at Verizon. It must be the new V710 Correct ?? If so follow the instructions in the Nav manual and also the V710 manual. I have the V710 and it works fine just like DR Fusco described. The only fault is you can't tranfer the phonebook. Outside of some minor problems the phone works very well in the Prius. You just need to sucessfully get them to see each other. Good luck

    I have the 710 as well not the best because Verizon may have hoppled the phone. Motorola is working on some of the problems. You do have to do a bit of work but it goes fairly easily. Follow the directions in the phone manual and the Nav manual. They need to learn how to talk to each other, after they have been introduced they will talk to each other. The phone and the car are both very proper and traditional in their outlook and will not diene to speak to one another. Prior to a proper introduction they can not acknowledge each others presence. This is not rocket science. Just go through the drill.

    daylight screen visibility?

    regarding screen visibility:

    Is there any chance you're trying to drive all the time with the headlights on? If you are, then the map screens will stay in 'night' mode, which is VERY hard to see in the daylight. There's a way (I forget the exact sequence of button pushes) you can go in and force it to display in 'day' mode when the headlights are on. I haven't had any cases where I have trouble seeing the screen, except when my wife wanted to drive with the headlights on...
