After seeing that I was hovering around 48/49 MPG after trying to hyper-mile while driving around on my first tank, I cheated by driving around for a half an hour trying to score a round 50MPG. Bad I know, but I figured just this once.

Anyway, that may not sound too impressive but the vast majority of it was short trips (<3 miles) and I was psyched!

Just thought I'd share/seek validation.

Congrats, Bum! For a first tank that's great. My first few tanks were probably in the mid- to upper 40s. That's partly because of the cold weather, but also because I'm a slow (hypermiling) learner. Keep practicing and you'll keep pushing it higher.

It's not cheating. It's called practice.

Nice work. Not sure if I would arbitrarily drive around just to increase MPG ... but to each their own.

Hopefully it will just get better as time goes on.

Not to outdo you, but I just recorded 52.8 MPG for my first tank last week (around 450 miles). :p

Have fun with your new ride!

Howay the Bum! As the summer approaches go for 55 MPG. A couple of trips out to DIA on a tank will probably help your cause. ;) I'm hoping that I can break my best (56.3MPG) this summer (my second with the Prius).

I bought my Prius a few weeks ago. On the first tank I got 47.3 MPG. I was driving the other day and was alarmed when I saw that I had gone 470 miles on the tank. The bar was blinking. When I filled up it took less than 10 gallons of gas ... and, although the display estimated 48 MPG, I did the math and found that I had gotten 49.65 MPG. That was driving in town quite a bit, then a 350 mile round trip on expressways to Minneapolis. What a car!

Something I just discovered about the Prius is you can't really do the math based on how much gas goes into the fuel bladder because it can change capacity based on the temperature (a cold spell got me to the point where I could only fill my tank half way the other day).

That said, the Prius is quite a kick butt automobile! I gave my grandparents a test drive today after Easter lunch and I think they may want to get one now!

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, all! I'm looking forward to see just how many MPG I can squeeze out of my new ride!

First post here, great group. My last car was a 94 Saturn SL2 and belonged to a like group...large knowlege base! This one too!! :D

Anyway, my first tank was 48mpg, second, 49.89mpg. Still hovering around upper 40's lower 50's. Once I was getting 54.8mpg on the way home from work this past Wednesday...wow! My ustahave SL2 got around 28-30mpg and I was happy. But now, geez. If I get below 45mpg I'll be mad ;)

BTW, just had the windows tinted, and there's a new clear film out that can go on your windshield. Cuts about 50% of infra red, 99% of UV. Blew my mind... Going to get it done before things really get hot here.

I actually did 81mgp on my way to work! But it's mostly going downhill for the first 15 miles -- the last 10 I coasted a lot, and tried to get only yellow or no arrows! But then I took a big hit on the way back -- which is, obviously, mostly uphill...

    Congratulations.

I went to San Francisco on Monday with three people in the car and lots of luggage. I took I5 North and got 40 miles to a gallon. On the way home I took the 101 and got 48 miles to a gallon.

I picked up my Prius on Apr. 1st, on my original tank I filled up after about 300 miles and I was getting just over 54 MPG, but since I was going on vacation I needed to fill up for a trip to Virginia to visit family and averaged 50 MPG all on the interstate. But I felt like an idiot after I got there because I had enough gas to get there on one tank but was down to 1 bar. The next day on vacation it started blinking as I was pulling out of their driveway and it only carried me about 10 of the 15 miles I needed to get to the closest gas station, I think it ran out at about 530 ish. Called my mother in law she brought me can of gas with less then a gallon in it, got to the gas station and was only able to squeeze 9.9 gallons in it. WOW. But it still didn't change the fact that I made myself look like an idiot touting a hybrid to a Diehard Ford Country family.
