I'm another new owner (2 weeks). 6'4" but unlike Viking 31 all my height is in the torso (32 in inseam) so my problem was always trying to get the ejection seat low enough that my helmet wasn't scratching the canopy. As a result my issues with cars is always related to headroom. And the Prius is fine in that regard...I sold my venerable 1994 Camry to get the Prius and both headroom and legroom are superior.
Don't know about driving, but I am impressed that my friend's 6'6" husband sits in the rear seat of her 2007 Prius with no complaints. She also has two 6'3"-plus sons - sure would like to see the 4 of them in her car sometime
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(scoot @ Feb 8 2007, 10:54 AM) </div> I guess I could elaborate a bit. Leg room is a huge issue on a motorcycle. I chose a BMW R1150RT, and one of the deciding factors was the adjustable seat, something that is not available on many bikes. Even with that bike, I have the seat a bit higher with shims under the seat mount. On a motorcycle, you are basically locked in one set position. On a long trip, if you don't fit the bike, it can get to be a real ordeal. In contrast, leg room is much less of an issue with a car. All cars have adjustable seats. Harry
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Earthling @ Feb 9 2007, 07:30 AM) </div> I can imagine that the issues with the motorcycle are signficant. At least for me, they are extremely signficant with cars too. A comfortable seat in my primary car is really important, and that means that I want the seat back tilted at a fairly erect position without hitting my head on the ceiling, and I don't want my knees hitting anything, and I want to be able to stretch out my legs occasionally. The Prius is my partner's car, but it works fairly well for me. Headroom is good, leg room is pretty good, knee room is so-so. Oddly enough, the car that "fits" my body the best is a Mini. Fantastic seats that go WAY back, plenty of headroom, etc. I used to have a VW Jetta Gli w/ Racaro seats -- it fit really well too. I think that shorter people also have very signficant issues in car buying, but they don't get to complain about sitting in coach on an airline as much as I do.
The Prius seats are comfortable for tall people if you compare cars in it's class. The ergonomics work great but the seat comfort is not as good as SAAB, Volvo or Mercedes. I thought the seat was uncomfortable when I bought the car (see posts from me about a year ago), but I must say that with time the prius gets more and more comfy. I like that you sit high in it and even longer trips (using cruise control) works great for me.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(verine2116 @ Feb 8 2007, 01:00 AM) </div> I'm 6'7" 38" inseam and fit just fine, My right leg rests against the center console on long drives but its not bad. I don't like the steering well much but I still love the car.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(verine2116 @ Feb 8 2007, 02:00 AM) </div> I am 6'7" and 180 lbs. Tall and skinny. I have to slide in somewhat sideways (my knees) to get into the car. Once I am in I am OK. But I have noticed some hip pain recently. I think it may be because there is no support on the sides because I am trying to lay my right leg sideways to fit more comfortably.
I'm 6'4" and have the front seats all the way back and have zero legroom problems. even sitting in the back seat, it is fine. especially compared to backseat legroom in other cars
I'm 6'6" and I fit in the car just fine. The headroom is great. As for the leg room I could use a little bit more but I am used to not fitting into items with outmaking a few adjustments.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(scoot @ Feb 8 2007, 10:54 AM) </div> I hear you. I'm going to break that cruise lever off during a right turn one of these days. I'm 6'2", and I do hit the shift lever some of the time too. The car has taught me that I just need to sit up straighter. (Heck, I can even fit in a Greyhound bus if I sit like I was taught in kindergarten.) Since the shifting is electronic, it is probably pretty easy to move the lever up on the dash a little. The Prius' space doesn't really bother me (and I've been known to be a little claustrophobic at times). I guess learning to drive and driving your first 150k miles in a '71 SuperBeetle tends to get you accustomed to being a little cramped. I, of course, would like more room, but I wouldn't get rid of the Pri for it. And I would never fly anywhere if airplanes did not come with exit rows.
I'm 6'-5" and yes, the knees were near the shifter knob, but after mod'ing the seat back one inch back, it's not too bad.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(pewd @ Feb 8 2007, 03:02 AM) </div> I am 6'7" - I have to turn legs to the side to get in. I really wish that I was able to get the THIGH support that I need and also get the seat back a few inches. That would be perfect. My legs get sore since I do not use CC on long trips. I am going to have to start using cruise. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(hill @ Apr 20 2007, 10:26 AM) </div> You were able to move the seat back? Is there somewhere that I can get instructions on that?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Bobby @ Apr 20 2007, 11:03 AM) </div> I had parts machined at work to do it (Did it as work as a 'G' ... don't tell ).
I'm six three. The thigh support for my right leg is too low, so my knee joint hangs in the air and I sometimes have to bend my ankle to hold my foot off the accelerator pedal when cruising. One solution (alas, unavailable) would be to have another inch of rearward seat travel so that my knee joint would straighten out a bit and my thigh would get some support. Another solution, which does work, is to use a thin chair cushion to provide some thigh support without raising me up too high in the seat. Chair cushions have tie cords at the back end for tying around the back supports of a chair. You can tie a thick knot in each one and stuff the knots into the seam between the seat back and the part you sit on; the knots will keep the cushion from sliding off the seat when you get in and out. I think Toyota should add a longer seat track for the driver's seat because that would be a better solution. Cruise control helps because it allows me to shift my leg. The seat itself is comfortable enough and would provide the necessary thigh support if the front end of the seat were an inch higher. If you elect to use a cushion to give you more legroom, watch that your head doesn't end up so high that you have to duck to see overhead traffic lights. I still love the car and I find it more comfortable than any other car I've driven including my partner's Jetta wagon, which has even less legroom.
I'm 6'3" but slim and proportionate so I have zero troubles with space, except when I sleep in the rear with the seats folded down AND my speaker box in there. Without the speaker box or my girlfriend (long road trips) I fit fine everywhere in the car. My buddy though, is 6'5" and has rather long legs and weighs 280lbs and his knees hit the dash.
I'm 6'3 with short legs (32 inch inseam). I fit great in both the front and the back seats! Surprisingly so, as a matter of fact. Much more comfortable than my wife's Passat. Ted
I could not agree with you more Bob. I am experiencing the SAME thing. I have used a towel for my right leg to help. I am searching to see if there is something that I can buy to help with the lack of thigh support.
my fiance is 6'3". He's okay in the front seat; hates the back seat (he says his head touches the rear glass)
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(busyrosy @ Apr 23 2007, 11:15 AM) </div> The back does have less head room. But a good amount of leg room. Just wish that the front had more head room.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Angel Flight Pilot @ Apr 20 2007, 01:32 PM) </div> I'm 6'2" (which sounds short in this thread!), and can relate to some of the complaints around here. <_< Having "average" proportions for my height, I keep the seat all the way back & fairly upright, and only find my right knee about 1" from the dash and about 1" above my head. Just right. B) Fitting is not a problem, though I wouldn't want to be much closer! Anyway, my point is that I wonder if there is a technical/safety reason relating to the side airbag that the seats do not slide back further than they do? Does anyone think there is a risk with the effectiveness of the side airbag by moving the seat further back than OEM? Just wondering...
