600 miles between fill-ups...

I average 55mpg without using severe hypermiling methods.At 55mpg i get approx,649 mptank rated at 11.8 gals. It dosn't matter wether i put in 5 or 8 gals at a time ,the results are the same.

55mpg x 11.8 =649 miles per tank.

Well this fillup for me was 503 miles on 9.502 gallons. If I actually has 2.3 gallons left I could have gone 600 plus on a tank too. But I don't trust it to actually have that much gas left. My MFD said 56.0 mpg, but the calculated was only 52.92 mpg. This is the best I've ever done over this many miles. The trick for me this time was my wife has been gone the last 2 1/2 weeks, so there haven't been any really short trips I made. I don't know about your yard, but I understand the highest point in Florida is about 300 ft elevation. Most of my driving is between about 2000 ft and 2500 ft elevation. I suspect you're exaggerating just a wee bit about hills in your yard being more than 300 ft.

BTW, this morning I filled up for $3.099/gal and this evening I saw the prices at $3.179 for the least expensive gas in town.

The point is people come in bragging about getting 50+ MPG like everyone is supposed to get that and the new people end up frustrated because they cannot. I don't know of any Prii owners in my area that get over 50mpg. Most get 45-48mpg. I'm just trying to be realistic. I run into this stuff in racing all the time too. SOmeone talking about how their stock Vette ran xx.xx in the 1/4mile and acting like everyone should run that time. The problem is there are MANY variables involved with best ET just as there is with best MPG. My normal driving will only allow me a max of about 48mpg unless I start drafting semis or cruising below speed limits which is unsafe in this area. In other areas of the state where I salmon fish I can get 54mpg avg. due to reduces speed limits and very flat terrain. Gas formula will also have an effect.

Again, I'm "keepin' it real". I'm not saying you guys don't get the MPG you say you do.

 

Maybe this has already been addressed and maybe this is a very newbie question but i don't know much about cars.

I was wondering what functional purpose the bladder serves and why it is there, since it seems to decrease tank size.

Almost none of us ever manage to put in 11.8 gallons when we refill the tank. Our average is 9 gallons. But I do think your post probably represents how the radio ad copywriter came up with the 600 miles a tank figure; i.e., someone who hadn't driven a prius looked up the average combined Prius mileage (unrevised--55 mpg) on the internet and multiplied it by the tank size.

 

My 06 got 500 right before it ran out of gas out in the country...when I was late for dinner with my wife...

I think it's the marketing guys (# gallons of fuel x EPA mileage).

Like always, I try not to confuse marketing with reality...

And as I said, that's the best mileage I have ever gotten. I cheated a bit to do that even. Going into Spokane and back, I've been taking the side roads rather than the freeway. That keeps my speed below 50 mph, which helps a lot.

Ohh yeah! I can believe that. I drove through town and around the marshes today which consists of a 2-lane road with 35mpg speed limits and barely any traffic so I could drive any way I wanted. Over a 31mile drive I was at 55mpg avg. Once back in town traffic had picked up and I dropped to 54mpg. If one doesn't have to drive on the freeway with the other maniacs that want to do 30mph over the speed limits, you can get decent milage.

 

I did it off my first tank! Just purchased last week.

Hey Ya'll-
This is so totally doable. Believe it or not. In the old days I used to post pictures, but that takes too much time.

I have 71,800 miles on my 2004. I have gotten very few tanks of less than 600 miles. I have gotten a dozen at over 700 miles and I have gotten on of 818 miles. I have a 30 mile commute in the hillcountry into Austin. I drive with the average traffic. There are many tricks that I learned on this site early on.

I top off with an extra gallon or so at each fillup and I've never had a problem as a result. I fillup when I have calculated to have used 11.5 gallons or so, but sometimes 12. I have put 12.7 gallons in the tank. I have gone as many as 231 miles before the first pip disappeared. 224 miles on this tank before the first pip disappeared. I am currently at 60.5 miles per gallon at around 320 miles. This is the best time of year for mileage for me. My best was 65.1 mpg on the 818 mile tank.

There are a dozen Prius owned by friends that were purchased after riding in my car. They all start out at 45 mpg and after I show them some tricks they all get over 50 mpg, even my lead foot wife. I just heard from one that has a short commute through the hills and he just registered a 54 mpg tank. The worst thing for mileage is speeds over 60 mph. If I drive 80 mph on the interstate I will get 40 MPG. If I drive 40 on the back roads, I will get 80 MPG.

If your experience is that it's not possible to get these results in your car and you live in the Austin area, I will get 60 mpg in your car if you will buy me lunch. I've gotten quite a few lunches that way. It is easy to adjust your driving to what works best with the HSD.

I appreciate the reply. Yesterday I participated in the Tour to the Shore. The results are interesting. I'm presuming a complete listing will be provided and will post when it's received. There is some variance among the cars, terrain has an effect, but I'm sure the biggest factor can be found behind the steering wheel.

The only time I am really concerned about tank size is on a long trip in unfamiliar territory.
