Read it again, unless you have something special that others dont, it is 8 years 100K on the Hybrid portion.

From Toyota site, matches what is in my warranty book;
I couldnt find anything regarding emissions though.

The 10yr/150kmi warranty is for California and states with California Emissions requirements for cars. All others are the 8yr/100kmi hybrid warranty.

You have 60 days to cancel out of the warranty. You can tell them that you found it cheaper and usually they will adjust/match it. They will credit the difference to your loan. They will not give you any money back. The credit does not count as a payment. Your balance is less so your final payment is less. You have to go to Finance person that did your contract.

I agree with you line of reasoning, but there are more lines.

I see the warranty merely as an insurance policy.

I trust Toyota is among the top in the world in thier workmanship, but they are not perfect and neither are all the links in the chain of manufacturing of all of those parts involved.

We had a freak IC chip go bad on one of ours.. the drivers window had a mind of its own.. sometimes it would let you bring it back up.. other times, it would stay down for days until it got in the "mood" to go up.. so for securities sake.. we left it up... a real pain for ATM's... getting coffee.. etc.
Anyway.. that cost was about 900.00 to fix it "covered by warranty".. the part had to be shipped from overseas... a tiny little part buried in the dash far in the back.

Anyway as discussed at length in other threads, the prius is cutting edge.... few professional mechanics can touch it, few laymechanics can either, and so you are at the "mercy" of the dealer "which has none!" to fix your car and so big bucks are always on the ticket.

I don't buy an extended warranty because I "expect" anything to go wrong.. because I really don't, but the prius was made by humans and every part is not perfectly consistent with all other parts.... how many millions of little transistors etc is in one IC chip?.. who knows.. but I can't fix one!

So yes, for me, its merely peace of mind.... just like all mother other insurance policies on myself, my family members, my health, my car, my house etc.....nione of which I expect to go wrong.... I just know it can.

To each his own..... none of my other cars have I ever purchased an extended warranty.

However, I'm caught between a rock and a hardspot.... the prius is the best enginneered car I've ever owned, but thats is offset by the extreme complexity of the electronics and CVT transmission and likelihood of paying through the nose should something happen. Because the number of mechanics that can touch it are so rare, it raises the price even more than the already high rates from mechanical issues.

So, as long as a person is informed.... its a "comfort zone" choice of whether you are willing to pay for the peace of mind.

If I had the california warranty.... it would indeed make that decision harder.

Too bad they don't have an even cheaper extended warranty for californians since those folks are already covered longer and so the risk for the insurance company is less.

I thought I had posted later that They knocked it down to $726 and issued a check to me for the balance. Hey a $1256.00 loan for 2.9 over 5 years is a lot cheaper than one of my credit cards I needed to use for a new laptop. Guess what is getting paid off! :)

Hi everyone, I just got my Prius! Happy Earth Day, what timing.

Now that it's April 2007 I don't know if the first post in this thread should be updated? Should I get a quote from warrantyshack.com or just contact Troy directly for the extended warranty? My dealer charged me a special price of $1895, so I'm returning that.

Thanks for the help!

Getting concerned that I am not getting a call back from these guys at warranty shack. I filled out the webform about 2 weeks ago and no call back and no email. I just filled out the form again. I am at 35,300 - so not much time to waste!

Anyone have any other way to reach these guys?

Thanks,
Tony

I just bought my new Prius last Thursday. He gave me the 6yr/75K warranty for $1100, but he also lowered my APR to make my monthly payment stay low.

If I cancel the warranty, what happens to my rate and my monthly payment?

I'm afraid to talk to the finance dept. because the guy lowered my rate only because I chose the warranty.

Any advice would help.

Is the credit through Toyota credit? You have 30 days to cancel, once you have your finance account number there isnt a thing that can be done, they will have to cancel it if you tell them to, but they will probably do what they did for me and lower the price and refund the difference, if they are honest enough.

The finance guy I'm working with didn't even bother to return my calls or email about cancelling the warranty. Two weeks of nagging resulted in him sending me a form to sign to cancel.

I'm not sure how this will affect the financing because they haven't even bothered to send me any paperwork about the financing yet... this process is messed up.

I sent an email to Toyota to cancel my warranty. They emailed right back that they would cancel it and give me a credit on my Toyota loan. Done. I didn't have to talk to the finance manager. I don't know what the email address is though, my Gateway computer crashed a few months after the warranty ran out. I backed everything up to a WD 500 Gb hard drive that crashed right after (user error).

Kinda funny. I called his number a little over a week after mailing in what they wanted and started to leave a voice mail. He then pickup while I was leaving a message. It turned out that he was leaving a voice mail on my phone at the same time; telling me that everything was good to go.

WOW, THANK YOU PRIUS CHAT!!!!

We paid a little under $1700 for our extended warranty through the dealer. Which today I cancelled after hearing back from Troy. This is such an amazing deal & I know 3 other people who are looking at the Prius, I will tell them about this site!!

Hello,

I'm buying a new Toyota Camry Hybrid. My Dealer has quoted a Extended Warranty double the $990 price. Am I able to acquire the same ""Toyota Extra Care Platinum Warranty" from WarrantyShack.com?

Thank-you

Is this the same warranty offered by the dealers? My dealer wanted over $1600 for the warranty. If I can get it for nearly half that, I will, but will the dealer recognize it when/if the time comes to use it???

Thanks

bah, my 60 days for a refund from the warranty I got from my dealer expired about a week ago. Well, still enjoying my Prius but I could have had to owe almost a thousand dollars less <_<

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(WebGuru @ May 7 2007, 07:24 PM) </div>
My understanding is that yes, you can buy the same extended warranty from anywhere. Well, at least now I understand that...

Hi All,

First, just a quick heads up that I'll be away next week for a little R&R, and won't be back until Tuesday May 22nd after this Friday. So don't be alarmed when you don't hear back from me next week if you fill out a warrantyshack quote request or try and email me. I will get back to everyone when I return :)

WebGuru & Spideyman - The plans I am offering are the genuine Toyota factory backed plans through Toyota Financial Services. They're the same as you would get from any other Toyota dealer that offers them. For a quote, either fill out the WarrantyShack quote request form or you can email, phone, or pm me. Just make sure and remember to mention you're a member of PriusChat.

Kosmikpanda - Not that I am suggesting one way or another what you should do....but you can cancel a service contract anytime. It's just that after the initial cancellation period (apparantly 60 days in your case), the refunds are calculated on a pro-rated basis. So you'd get back 95% (guesstimate), instead of 100% of what you paid for it.

Toyota extended warranty zero deductable... except diagnostic charges?

After ordering a 2007 Prius, I discovered this website and found the warranty information informative.

The dealer had not mentioned anything about an extended warranty while ordering the Prius, but I now expected the sales pitch when the Prius was delivered.

While taking care of the paperwork during delivery, I was offered an extended warranty, but to my surprise,
it was not the Toyota extended warranty. I don't recall the name of the warranty, but it seemed nearly indentical to the Toyota platinum plan that I had become familiar with. The price for a 7 year 75,000 zero deductable plan, $1550.00.

I then asked the dealer why they weren't offering the Toyota extended warranty. (Probably because they have a higher margin on another plan.) The dealer admitted that the plan offered was very similar to the Toyota plan, except that diagnostic charges were covered in the plan offered and not covered in the Toyota plan.

The dealer explained that in the Toyota plan, if a service personel diagnosed something that was not in need of repair or replacement, the diagnostic charges are not covered. In other words, if the service personel mistakenly diagnoses the wrong part, you pay for the mistake. (Although the Toyota plan is worded different.)

After reading on this website how much some dealers were charging for the Toyota extended warranty, I asked my dealer if he offered the Toyota plan and if so, how much for the Platinum 7 year 75,000 zero deductable.

He quoted a relatively fair price (compared to other dealers) of $1350.00. He then started explaining the Toyota plan as I pulled a brochure for the Toyota plan out of my pocket and stated that I had already received a quote from another dealer that was lower than his price. Without much hesitation he dropped his price to $990.00. I informed him that he was still a couple hundred above my previous quote. He would not budge any further, claiming that my previous quote was below his cost.

I have since looked into the strange disclaimer in the Toyota extended warranty regarding coverage of diagnostic charges. The Toyota plan states, "Coverage does not apply to diagnostic charges made in connection with a covered repair."

Can anyone explain why diagnostic charges are not covered in a (so called) zero deductable plan?

They need to make money somehow! :D I have had warranty work done on a used car, it was a Ford, with an aftermarket warranty, and diagnostic charges were covered if it was a warrantied repair, otherwise the diagnostic fee was charged. I believe the toyota warranty acts the same way, if a repair requires a diagnosis, and is not covered under warranty, you get charged for it, but if it is a covered item, then the diagnostic fee is covered, at least it should be. Of course if it is a quite obvious issue, and they attempt a diagnostic fee, well, they can stick it. Dude, there is a hole in the side of the block I aint paying no diagnostic fee for you to tell me there is a hole in the block! :D
