    Hey guys,

I've been lurking for awhile and am getting close to buying a Prius. I dug around in the archives, but couldn't find a recent thread about LA dealers. Prices here seem to be getting below MSRP, so I'm looking for pointers on getting a good deal somewhere around the LA area. Any success stories?

    Thanks!

    Mike

I have to jump on this thread and say that I'm in the exact same boat as Mike. I'm in LA (in the Glendale area), looking to buy, (probably a package 5 in Magnetic Gray). I was quoted the following from Toyota of Anaheim's internet department:

    $21,498 package #2
    $23,574 package #5

I've heard of package #2's going for as little as $20,998, but I haven't heard much about package #5. If package #2's are easier to come by and seem to yield better deals, I'll go that way if needed. But right now, it seems that #5's are, as above, only around $2K more and give you nav, stereo upgrade, bluetooth, dimming rear view, homelink, foglamps, alarm, etc. Is my logic sensible?

Can any LA area people please post their success stories and advice for Mike and I? It's high time that I break up from my '03 Passat 1.8t wagon with a combined MPG of 22!

    Best,
    Justin

I don't know what fees are added on in Calif -

Doc fees, Transport Fees, tag and license and of course taxes? These fees can add a couple of grand.

    Those seem like good prices

    What is your OTD price.

Not sure about OTD, these were just car prices I got over the phone.

Be careful with some of the dealers ... I traveled 80 miles on a Friday afternoon to Toyota of La Puente only to find out that they added $4,000 in options to the car (leather seats, wheels, etc.) But on the phone, they had promised that they were selling at MSRP and were not marking it up. The cute little trick was that they didn't mark up the sticker price, but they added things on.

Dealerships that I thought were dealing with me fairly were Ventura (where I bought at MSRP), Keyes Toyota in the SFValley, and Toyota of Santa Barbara. Those are a ways from you guys, but they all seemed fair at the time ... no one was going below MSRP at that time.

Helpful and very interesting, thank you!

Anyone else have any good deals and good dealerships in the LA area to share with us? It would be a great help.

Check out Penske Toyota at Downey. The internet department gave me the lowest price for 2007 with package #5. It was below invoice. Very straight forward no hassel. First three oil changes are free with them.

Look like most dealer had dropped the price after the 2.9% apr promotion.

Copied this from a previous post, hope it helps:

I bought a 2007 Package #5 at Symes Toyota (Pasadena) about a month ago for $24,374 before tax and title. Salesman was Jaime. I thought that I got a really good deal at the time. They told me that that was their invoice price, although it was below invoice according to Edmunds.com at the time. They added $45 for a "document preparation fee" which I didn't hassle over, but might have been able to get dropped.

They will try to add on an extended warranty, but you can get it for much cheaper from the guy here on PriusChat. Do a search for extended warranty on the forums here and you'll find it.

    Tax was $2014.57 and License/Title was $218.75.

Total out the door was $26,652.32

My wife has been driving the car for three and a half weeks and she loves it.

    Good luck shopping.

I'm trying to part with my Isuzu Rodeo...it gets 18-20 MPG, which isn't tooooo bad far an SUV, but I'm ready for something better! I'm also ready for a quieter ride, easier parking, and less fatiguing driving experience!

I haven't dug in too hard with a dealer yet, but the best I've been quoted is $21,740 as a special end of the month deal. Everyone else is quoting $21,940, so I haven't been in a hurry to jump on anything. I've been talking to the guys in Hollywood, Pasadena, etc. I'm in Los Feliz, so we're close.

I think I'd be happy with $20,998 if I could get it. I was originally budgeting well under $20k when I was looking at Mazda 3s, Impreza Wagons, and Matricies. I never really considered the Prius till I road in a friends and was impressed with the quiete ride, passable storage, and general niceness of the car. The MPG was initally just a bonus in my mind, I just wanted a little nicer car...then I did the math and now can't imagine buying anything else on the market...the environmental impact is a big plus for me too, being a tree hugging californian. ;)

It's a bit of a drive but I highly recommend Power Toyota in Irvine. I've purchased 2 cars from them and have nothing but good things to say! My boyfriend bought his prius there and they went above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly.

I was on a bike ride yesterday thru downtown LA, and was surprised to see maybe 15 or 20 new Prius on the dealers lot. I don't know the dealer, or the area (not my usual neighborhood), but they also sold Lincoln-Mercury, at least shared the same building. It may have been on Figuroa, but I'm not sure. Anyway there appear to be many choices of Pri sutting on dealer lots, should be a good time to bargain for color, options and price. Not true when I got mine in Jan 06, take it or leave it. Wrong color, and $500 over list. And I had to drive to Lancaster to find one. Not true anymore.

Yeah, they seem plentiful. Hollywood Toyota says they have 100 on the lot...maybe we should organize a group buy!

I feel you on the bad MPG, Mike. Time for a change.

Well, I have already been given the $21,498 from Alan in the Internet Department from Toyota of Anaheim, so we're in good shape as far as beating your $21,940 quote. And for me, since I'm into the package #5, I got a quote of $23,574. I'm determined to get it lower, though!

Since you live in Los Feliz, maybe we should both hit up the right dealer at the same time. It might get us some more "impact" if we coordinate our efforts. Anyway, I'm putting my Passat up for sale this week, and as soon as I get that cash, I'm ready to buy.

    Justin

I talked to the guys at the dealer in Glendale yesterday. The guy I spoke with was very nice and I liked his no-pressure approach, but he seemed pretty unwilling to deal. Told me straight up he'd only givde me $500 for my Rodeo (which he didn't even see) and that the price was sticker. He said he'd try to match other offers, but that other dealers would basically scam me with low ball prices to get me in and then not actually live up to the promise. He might be right, but he didn't seem to be saying he'd give me the best price to earn my business like a lot of guys. I did like him, though, and would love to buy from him if he can give me a reasonable price.

Has anyone tried selling a car to Carmax? I might go see what they offer me for my trade, otherwise I might have to do the private party thing. I'm not taking $500 for a car edmunds lists at $2500 tradin and $4500 street value...

OUch! Yeah, you should sell private party. That's what I'm doing. I'll get about $14K for my Passat, where the dealer is offering me $12K.

Bummer about the deal. Sticker??? That is basically ridiculous. I've got WRITTEN offers from other dealers that are way below MSRP. How are you paying for the car?

    Mike,
I sold my 98 Lexus LS400 to Carmax after I got the second Prius. The price was low but close enough not to hassel with private sale. Unfortuneately not near Edmunds #s.
They are by LAX just off 405 fwy.
From my experience and reading this and other boards you should not pay over INVOICE per Edmunds.
I had good experience with 2 LA area dealers if you need info just PM me.

I might do ELoan, but I'll be financing the purchase. I have a couple of email price quotes from dealers that have the $21940 price, so I imagine I could get him to match that. I want a good price, for sure, but I don't want tons of hassle and I definitely don't want to sit in some sales office for 4 hours getting jerked around by a lying salesman. I've been down that road before....

Understood. But just so you know, I've already got an offer from Alan at Miller Toyota of Anaheim for a package #2 at $21,498, so you could save a few bucks getting in touch with him, getting a confirmation of the deal, then driving down the 5 a bit. Just want you to get the best deal you can. I'm getting a package #5 probably, so it'll be another $2K, wherever I go. In the meantime, I'm just concentrating on the economics of it, selling my Passat, and when it's all good to go, then I'll really start beating people up.

    Best,
    Justin
