If anyone actually expects the Federal government to aid them in time of need is in for a rude awakening. The whole situation is at best disgusting.

I'm sure they would have been happy to take all of the money and the oil if they could figure out a way to divert it to the War in Iraq.

There is always another side to every story, You know if the police responded arguments & disputs (only looking at one side) the way most of the posters do here in FHOP, there would be alot of innocent people in places they shouldnt be.... ;)

However Im not going to try and defend Bushes actions, thats his job.... Just mearly dropping my 2 cents.

I completely agree and no one should jump to conclusions. Perhaps it's that I am dealing more with statistacal analysis that I'm really starting to hesitate before acting on a single "data point."

However, I am anxiously awaiting that "other side." And I'm not saying, HCGuy, that you should provide it; just that I'm sure it'll be a doozy.

You must be new to politics in general. In most instances, unless a government is overtly corrupt such those in most African countries, governments realize accepting foreign aid undermines their authority and standing with the general populace.

Case in point: we have seen liberal leadership in states such as Massachusetts that are so ineptly run that they must accept fuel oil aid for many of their residents from sworn enemies of the United States to keep them from freezing in the winter.

C'mon, medical supplies from Cuba?? I'd rather eat Chinese dog food. I also suppose Cuba offered us billions in low interest loans too...

If you were "King for the day" would you accept token money and supplies from the Taliban and expect your party members to remain loyal??

Disgusted? Yes I was; by the hordes of inner city Louisiana residents groveling for cash handouts only to spend it on non essentials. Conversely towns in Mississippi such as Waveland received relatively little if any Federal aid and proudly rebuilt and moved on without Federal handouts.

You're in the wrong country (and mindset) if you always think your "Mommy or Daddy" will bail you out of your problems.

There was considerably more that was rejected than British food and Cuban medical aid:

We needed a Marshal Plan after Katrina and got a Bush indifference.

I lived in the area for both Katrina and Rita. There was plunty of aide and things were well handeled outside the city limits of New Orleans. Within New Orleans those that did not evacuate were caught be surprise. Instead of going out after the storm to loot (as planed) they were surprised by a flood. Add to this the inept Mayor of the city, cops that left their post, and a governor that was an idiot and you have a real mess. Bush was not allowed to provide aide to the city (via the Mayor and Governor) because these two idiots thought it would cause people to enter the city and prevent those there from leaving. The problem was not at the Fed level....the problem was at the state level. How do I know.....I was a communicator at a nuclear plant and listened to the aide calls, orders for body bags and all the things that were going on. I was on the radio when a convery of FEMA trucks were prevented from entering the city by the mayor! It is not the Fed goverment that was screwed up....it was the city of New Orleans itself and the idiot Governor. And to make things worse...Do you think the mayor got re-elected based on a fair election? The local problems are why I and 500,000 people have left or are leaving the area. Ask yourself why the Mississippi Gulf Coast areas are way ahead of Louisiana in regards to recovery and why they are doing well by doing it themselves. These folks got the worst of Katrina. Ask why two years later it still takes a letter a week to make it to my family in New Orleans.....or why the crime is so bad that there are people roving on the causeway to force cars over to rob them. You Bush haters need to stop blaming bush for anything you can. In the case of katrina and New Orleans. The blame has nothing to do with Bush. He may be a crummy president...but you Bush haters go too far sometimes. People are still looking for a handout and no one wants to stay there. The area will be a mess for another 10 years. Most of the repair workforce are Mexicans....why.......because those folks come in and work their nice person off. .Everyone else at the labor level will not work. They were offering $250 week bonus at fast food places just to get people to work!! When they gave out the $2000 FEMA/red cross cards ....Best Buy and Circuit City sold out of big screen TVs. It was crazy seeing the trucks lined up to load the TV. Many of these folks did not even have electricty yet!!! .The place is a mess. So if you have not experieced it then don't express an opinion based on something you read in the newspaper. Have a nice day!

My opinion is that the first disaster was natural. The second disaster was government induced and there is plenty of blame to cast at all levels. The whole process was apparantly run by politicians that don't know their butt from a hole in the ground. Bush gets blamed because he was in charge and should have provided some leadership. Next time when this happens some other shmuck will be in power and will get the blame.

The credit card fiasco could have been easily averted by blocking the mcc codes of inappropriate businesses. As usual the scum and the thieves got the gold while people that could really use some help got the shaft.

Perhaps next time the Federal government should save the rest of us some money and leave New Orleans under water.

FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers have put the screws to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast... Its the government's fault the levies didn't hold - Army Corps built defective levies and now they, FEMA and BIG Brother are crawfishing... typical. June 1 is just around the corner - one more major hurricane and everyone can kiss New Orleans good bye... maybe we should move into Mexico - payback is only fair.

NO it is not the goverments fault. It is Louisianas fault. The state of Louisiana decided decades ago to design the levees to Cat II design. Then the Fed government gave Louisiana millions of dollars 15 years ago to study what it would take to upgrade them. The state pissed away the funds and never completed the study. The state and local government combined with a population that is unable to get things done (partly because of the inept local government and partly because they want a handout) is the blame. FEMA and the Corp of Engineers have their hands tied by the local and state people ...not the fed people.

As I recall, the levies are being rebuilt to handle a cat 3 storm. Who authorized that instead of building to cat 5 strength? Who is paying for it?
