Stock Tires....22k and worn!

Not rotating the tires every 5-6k on a front wheel drive car will cause premature wear.

My tires have a little over 31k and I still have about 5/32" of tread remaining. I run 35/33 psi, do mostly highway driving and rotate my tires every 5k.

I've found some good advice for alternative tires for the newer Prius. Is there anything out there for a classic, 2001? I am really tired of buying $500 tires every year, with only 12,000 miles on them. I live on a hill, so that probably contributes to the wear, but sheesh! Help!

 

Last week did my 20K service - tire depth is 8/32 all 4 tires. Front brakes at 9.5mm and rear at 4mm.
I'm rotating the tires every 5K and keep them at 43/41.

 

I really want to try something other than the stock tire on my 2001 Prius. Has anyone tried Michelin Harmony? How about the Michelin Destiny?

Will these be OK on my classic Prius, even though they don't have the XL rating?

if your running the Bridgestone Portenza's switch to Dunlop SP10's which are the OEM's on the 2003 Classic. Way better than the P's on the wife's 2001 Prius. Mine are 3 years old and about 45K km's and should go thru till next spring. I'm guessing about 30-35K miles. They are LRR's as well so mileage is not really affected.

Just an FYI, mine are in the exact same condition and I do keep the tires inflated and do my maintenance.
Also, if I let go of the wheel the car stays straight on the road too.

 

Don't blame Goodyear for the tires, as they were just working off the specs that Toyota supplied. I have a good friend who is a tire designer for Goodyear and was on the team that worked on designing the Integrity. Toyota's specs for the tires favor fuel economy over tire wear and handling. Of all the OEM's that Goodyear works with, he said that Toyota is the most demanding in what they spec for their cars.

 

Interesting. I just replaced my Integrity this morning too. The edges are gone for two of them. Two of them, I replaced already because of sidewall damage 2k ago (which still had some treads). And I run high psi like everyone here.

I tried 2 Kumho 758 2k miles ago, and it seems pretty good. So I replace the other 2 this morning. They are cheap too at $45/tire. And they seem to be a lot more comfortable than the Integrity. And the max is 44psi, so I have not seen decrease mpg with the first two tires. And will see if it will happen with all 4 now.

Although the following tires have different tread patterns, they all have the exact same construction:

• Destiny (Discount Tire)
• Agility (Sears)
• X-Radial (Costco, Sam's Club, etc.)
• Harmony (Michelin)

Since the X-Radial got high marks in a Consumer Reports comparison test, whichever of the four can be had for the best deal would likely do well, regardless of the application.

In a recent issue of Road&Track magazine, they had an update on their long-term test of a Cadillac CTS-V. In 24k miles, they went through three sets of rear tires, Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar EMTs, at $600 per tire locally. If you include a set of front tires that's nearly $5000 of tires in 24k miles.

The only catch with the $60-off four tires sale is that rather than simply knocking $60 off the total price of the tires, or even sending a $60 rebate check, Costco is now giving a $60 gift card.

It's not that big of a deal if you do a lot of shopping at Costco, but it's irritating if you don't, because it forces the purchaser to use the $60 at Costco which they might not want to do.

This is shocking news to me, as when I last purchased tires at Costco (about 6 months ago) I got a Michelin Rebate in the form of a "rebate check" send from Michelin's Rebate Center that I deposited in the bank. Obviously Costco is doing things different on THIS one, then !!
I used to buy a lot of tires from tirerack.com at great prices, but to get a local tire shop to mount and balance (and new valve stem) all four tires, even if I walked in with four "loose" rims, it cost me $45 - $60 !!
Costco will do "walk-ins" (loose rims) on tires they sell to you. I am very fussy with my alloy wheels, especially when I had my Acura MDX, but they will never go "up-one-size" or deviate from the OEM tire size !! Some liability issue or something, and as I stated Costco WILL NOT mount any "outside purchased" tire, just THEIRS !!

he was answering a question about tires for a 2001 Prius. Totally different than the G2 Prius. For tire information go to John1701a web site and see what all are recommended for the Prius. LRR's are recommended for top MPG.

It may have been some sort of stop-gap measure Costco used to fill-in for the time between the normal check-in-the-mail rebate sales which were directly from Michelin.

Consider yourslf lucky. Now you can get rid of those dogs and put on something safe in the rain. I switched mine out the day I took delivery and consider it money well spent.

 

I have 53,500 on the originals and am heading for 70k. They don't look that bad yet and my goal is to make sure I get something new before winter.

I just purchased tires there for my wifes car over the weekend at Costco and they took the $60 right off the price at checkout! Someone has been pulling at your chain I beleive!
