A video of the Lexus LS460 self parking. Sort of.
The thing to notice is the digital clock we all hate... they found a way to get rid of surplus stock, by putting them in the all new Lexus LS460!

lol.... morons.. I know it's meant to be comical but it's amazing how so many people are suckered into this video (see the comments below).

Again, this comical video is meant to reveal the stupidity of people that don't bother to learn how it works and just assume they know it all.

    a. position the car properly so the flag is at the corner of the car you want to park next to

That is THE most important bit that everyone tends to overlook. If you don't position properly, you'll spend 5 mins adjusting the box to make it green. Save yourself the time and position your car properly.

They had one on The Today show several months ago, all properly positioned by the Factory Rep. Even so the host could not get the thing to work. They finally stoped trying and went to comercial after some lame excuse. This has to be the #1 dumbest options ever. Maybe the kind of thing they could sell to a Hummer driver!!!!

I don't think people should need to learn too much about technology to get the benefits it has to offer. Too often, "(stupid) user error" is blamed when things go wrong. We now have a generation of people that have learned to accept that, they feel stupid when they can't get their brand new smartphone to download email and think that's normal. It's not, it's a symptom of technology developed by thinking from the technology to the human being being instead of the other way around.

An example. With Gmail, Google has shown it is possible to design a user interface that's easy to understand without sacrificing features. The makers of Thunderbird however still insist on menu items that say things like "HTML domains" and "Character encoding", not to mention "Do you want to compact your folders" 10 times a day. Nerds at work, beware.

We now live in a world divided into "those that get along with the new stuff" and "those that don't". That's really sad for the latter group, they are rapidly becoming the illiterates of the 21st century. It does not need to be that way. To all the nerds on the planet: wake up, there are all kinds of people on this planet and your inventions need to be useful to them too. Have a look at betterdesktop.org to see your inventions being used in the real world and learn from it.

To get back to the Lexus: if it says it can "autopark", it should do that, period. In my opinion, the feature is a gimmick (we get it here in the Prius), a party trick, but not really useful in its current state.

<shrug> but I do know if it's properly positioned, it will show a green box immediately when you shift into reverse. I know cause I've done it. Most people like lowlander below assume that it's "autopark". The full name is Advanced Guidance Parking ASSIST. This means IF you need help parking, then it's there, otherwise, go park the damn car yourself as was shown in the video. He parked it waaay faster than the system could (even if he could get it to work properly).

If not, then you're just gonna sit there pressing the damn arrows on the screen trying to get the box just right.

I agree with your first paragraph, however, I also think we should not cultivate a society that simply refuses to read and just wants everything to work as is right now. Nothing works perfectly in the real world. It's sorta like "you said this, now gimme. If it doesn't work, your product sucks" and frankly, it's getting annoying.

Why? because in the gaming industry, games are starting to come with shorter and shorter manuals. This is because people are too arrogant to read the manual. Apparently, reading the manual makes you a noob at a game or that you're too stupid to "figure it out". However for me, the manuals are to the point that it's useless and tells me nothing about the game other than the controls.

That said, if you want to fully enjoy the benefits, then please read the manual and understand its limits.

Maybe that's the reason why they didn't offer it on our Priuses because they figured wealthy people will be intelligent enough to work it out. So far, the only people that have issues with the systems are the journalists and car editors that have tested it. Over at the Lexus forums, owners of the LS have been enjoying the system.

Remember, it's an ASSIST. It's not meant to take over your parking job just like VSC isn't designed to take over your stupidity when driving in adverse conditions.

If they did that the hummer would just park itself ON TOP of the nearby vehicles.

Comical, yes. Practical, no. Worth seeing? Absolutely! Someone needs to modify this system on a hummer!!

I think you're perhaps a bit too enamored with technology.

Some of it does perform a useful funtion, but some of the electronics we've come to 'depend on' exists primarily to perpetuate itself, and the need for itself, and the profits of its manufacturers.

All the while, this crap ends up in our landfills! These devices have been shipped all over the world (either in pieces or as a whole), contain heavy metals, and encourage waste by being designed to be replaced rather than repaired.

An example: My new Apple Mighty Mouse. Built with parts manufactured in the US, which were shipped to and assembled in Indonesia, then shipped BACK to America.

The thing has more stamps in its passport than I do!!

Get this...then I dropped it ONCE from my desk onto a hardwood floor...and it broke. Now, it's dead, and was in use by me less than ten days.

The upshot: I wrote to Steve Jobs personally, not for a replacement, but to beseech them to make more durable products...

...and what did they do? One of his "assistants" called me, listened to my complaints, then (after I'd explained why I'd contacted them in the first place) she ignored everything I said and VOLUNTEERED TO SEND ME ANOTHER ONE AT NO COST...like this is at all the point I'm getting at!!!

Sure, technology is great and all, but, really, some of us avoid it not 'cause we're afraid of it, but because it's really more of a complication (for us and for the environment) than it's often worth.

I feel like you're making assumptions, like there are only two choices: a love affair with everything that comes with its own little recharger, or fear of everything technical...when, actually, there is a third option: willful disregard of lots of the 'fluff' techno stuff that costs a lot, isn't very durable, and usually comes with a service contract and a monthly fee.
