WoW a 1.7-mile-wide Category F-5 tornado, I've never heard of one being that big before.....

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of life :( , but that must have been one heck of a storm.

I wonder when they will blame global warming on the strom.

Kinda strange being the 2nd day of summer and the high is 76 today.

LOL In California earthquakes don't kill people. Structures in earthquakes kill people. Do not build on unconsolidatd land and be aware of earthquake proofing methods. If I die in an earthquake relatd accident then it's my own damn fault for chosing to live here.

The point remains. If you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen. IE if you cannot afford to rebuild a house on your own then don't build it on a sandbar or baymouth bar and definately don't build in tornado alley or New Orleans.

true on all of the above - brevity and me are definately not a hand in hand thing :D

We need more National Guards and we need more equipment so we can handle multiple events at the same time. This has highlighted how unprepared we remain 6 years after 9/11. We should increase the size of the military, especially the Army and Marines by several hundred thousand - and - increase the size of our National Guard. There is no reason a relatively small action like Iraq is so consuming of our total resources - and I fault all our officials on this one - defense and security must rise above politics.

A lot of stuff got wacked... 10 people died... dozen maybe... Did you see the pictures from the air? Everything is smashed to bits. Why wasn't everyone dead?

Same with Katrina. I don't believe God caused Katrina, I don't believe God caused the tornado in Kansas, but I believe He could have stopped either if it were his will to do so. I believe He stops tornados and hurricanes and disasters in our lives(car wrecks, slip and fall, bad relationships or deals, etc) and we never know they might have otherwise wacked us.

So, for these two disasters, He didn't stop the disaster. He never promised to stop the storms, only to be with His people through the storms. I think if you go to kansas, you'll find a lot of people with stories of how God saved them or protected them during the storm.

Only ~3000 dead in the world trade towers at 9 something am when 50,000 or so work there? 300 or 400 of those were people who don't work there who were running into the building, so we're at 2600 on a day when normally we have 50k. Maybe everyone was tied up at prayer meetings before starting their day at the office that day.

On another note, why ya'll looking for God to protect you from anything? Ya'll are kicking God out of every possible avenue in life where you can. Not in our schools, not in our government, not on our street corner, not in our laws...

What does Darwin have to say about this tornado? I thought 'order' was the natural progression of things. That tornado wasn't creating order. I leave my basement for a year or two and I go there and it still hasn't straightened itself out. I'm waiting..

Storms are effects of an energy system finding equilibrium. Order is an illusionary construct of man, patterns are the natural context of things and sometimes those patterns are forced well beyond the natural flux of such systems and the effect is a new pattern of organization. So what would you do with all the excess energy put into the earth system by solar insolation? Personally I would do what GAIA has done throughout time, I'd try to find a way to redistribute it and find equilibrium.

Study chemistry, physics, biology and a smattering of physical geography and that should all make sense.

    God: "Kansas?"
God's aide: "You know, one of the flyover states."
God: "I know I'm omnicient, but it doesn't ring a bell".
God's aide: "Kansas, the midwest, United States, planet earth - third planet from a rather mediocre star on one of the remote arms of an ordinary galaxy called the milky way, one of hundreds of billions of stars in hundreds of billions of galaxies".
    God:"Oh, that Kansas!"

The main difference is that no animal products, such as gelatin, can be used to clarify Kosher wines.

Take a look at these articles: What Makes a Wine Kosher? and A New World of Kosher Wines. The latter article has links to some producers of premium wines which happen to be Kosher. One of my favorite producers, which is missing from that list is Dalton.

Those are interesting articles. Thanks- I learned something!
One of the wineries mentioned, St. Supéry in Napa, does make some good wines.

It could also be argued that structures in tornadoes kill people (i.e. if they don't have a basement or structurally-sound room that can double as a shelter the middle of the ground floor, etc.). I live in Kansas but we rarely get tornadoes around the more heavily populated areas, such as Kansas City and Lawrence. The EF-5 that leveled Greensburg was a true rarity because it is the strongest tornado recorded since the '99 Oklahoma City tornado that killed 44. Remember that most tornados don't strike populated areas and most of them aren't nearly as powerful as the one that raked through Greensburg recently. Even when tornadoes do strike population centers, the damage is usually manageable (segments of a town may be affected, but unlike when an entire community is taken out).

Your argument is self-indicting because you fail to take into account the fact that despite advancements in technology, people will always be killed in natural disasters. Life on earth is inherently risky due to the unyielding power of nature. Another thing - do you realize that many, many tornadoes occur outside of "Tornado Alley" each year? I guess the entire Southern U.S. should just be depopulated because of all the hurricanes, tornadoes and floods they suffer, huh?

New Orleans should be rebuilt - along with a seawall/dike system similar to the one in the Netherlands that has protected the Dutch from the ocean for decades.

F8TL, if you are squashed like a bug during an earthquake I will not laugh at you or start a thread that laughs at you. Nor will I say I told you so. Or that God hates F8TL, etc. (Actually, God specializes in loving the unlovable. Me included.)

Strange thread. One group terrified that there might be a God so they have to work desperately and shrilly to prove there isn't. (If you don't believe there's a God, why do you get so excited that other people do? If you have logic on your side, why aren't you using it? If there's no God, move onto something else and leave us fools to our folly....)

And then there's another group concerned about Kosher wine. I guess they're in the God group, because otherwise, why would that matter?

And you have the wrong idea about evolution and Christianity. (I know where you got that idea from -- but the anti-evolution Christians are not mainstream and are just as afraid of the truth as you are.) Evolution is how God created humanity and everything else. Knowledge of science does not diminish God, but makes Him even greater. Everything science (and art) discovers was created by God. Very cool.

Christians are supposed to love the Lord with our minds. Sometimes we get it wrong, but we are directed not to check our brains at the church door.

So go in whatever peace you can find.

And know that God believes in you and has great plans for you.

We visited St. Supéry when we were in Napa during the harvest last September. Nice operation. Decent wines. I did not realize that any of their wines were kosher until I read these articles (I knew the answer, but I used Google to look for some citeable authority).

Another interesting visit, almost four years ago was at Hagafen. Ernie Weir, the owner and wine maker took us around and explained the process. After he learned that we both had kids in the same summer camp, he poured us some really nice bottles. We saw him again at parents' visiting day at camp a couple of weeks later.

Herzog Wine Cellars, a new state of the art facility in Oxnard which I have yet to visit, is driving distance for us.

Ok, we sort of agree, kind of loosely. I'm afraid it's not going to last too long though. ;)

No, we are not terrified that there might be a God. We are terrified of the people who believe there is one. As we have seen for the past 2 elections, they have enormous power to change the course of our country, and our world. In a really bad way. And that's scary. So I'm not gonna leave you alone about it. It affects me. Worse, it affects others. Because I probably benefited from this stupid presidency. (In the short term anyway.) Blech!

No, I simply did not find it important to state the obvious, that people will always be killed in natural disasters. Of course that will happen but when one choses to live in an area of increased chances for this to happen.....

I never stated that I am 100% where I live. Indeed a really huge quake could effect me if I happen to be in SF or some othr less solid landscape. I chose to live here so please don't feel sorry or have pity on me if something fell should happen due to a quake. :)

As for rebuilding New Orleans.. I think it's a bad idea but we are all entitled to our opinions. :) Any word on the subsiding issue (the city sinking into the Gulf)?

Thank you. I think if you spend more time in here you will find that some of these posts are not nearly as mean spirited as they come across initially. There are those of us that have a bad view of organized religion but rarely do we wish ill on a practitioner (Pat Robertson is an exception lol ). Some of us just get used to eachothers company and like to poke fun. It's kinda like making racial jokes between friends. It's not right but sometimes we do it anyway.

I grew up in Kansas, in a house, with a basement. I saw 2 tornados, but was never involved in one.

Kansas will always be made fun of because of the movie "The Wizard of Oz."

When all of the planes were ordered to land on 9/11, there were some people who found themselves "stuck" in Wichita, Kansas. They soon found out that the people there were very nice/giving, and they made some new friends.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in.

    Thanks.

    P.S. "There's no place like home." :D

Has anyone ever watched "The Wizard of Oz" with the sound off, while listening to "Dark Side of the Moon"?

I have been reading the attacks from the "enlightened" people out west in CA.
I live in the New Orleans area (in Jefferson Parish - next the airport). It may surprise you to learn that recent surveys show that less than half of metro New Orleans is below sea level!

Are you aware that New Orleans was founded in 1718 making it one of the oldest cities in North America?
Have any of you "enlightened" people bothered to learn about New Orleans before "bashing" the people here?
New Orleans has flooded in the past and rebuilt itself. Our houses were built raised off from the ground for this reason. That all changed when the building style of using "slab" construction (CA Ranch House anyone?) became popular after WWII. It was the FEDs that came in after Hurricane Betsy and offered us hurricane protection levees and didn't design them to spec. It was the FEDs that forced the digging of the MRGO to benefit the rest of the country. New Orleans is a major port city, and the shortened distance from the Gulf of Mexico to New Orleans, created by the MRGO benefited the country.

F8L said "I chose to live here so please don't feel sorry or have pity on me if something fell should happen due to a quake." Do you really choose to live there? Would you live there w/o a job? Are any of you who would consign New Orleans to death willing to relocate everyone and their lively hoods? Are you willing to give up a port city? Willing to give up the seafood? The oil pumped and refined here?

I am sorry if this is too long - but this talk blaming the people of New Orleans really gets my blood pressure up.
