    Hello!

My all new Pioneer Inno install.. reworked/revisted, lol. Here we go. I removed the antenna from the dash and placed on the roof outside. I am not planning to put it under a sharkfin because I am concerned about the reports of reduced signal strength. I live in the mountains, and need all the signal I can possibly muster.

Here is a pic of where I ran the antenna wire from the roof. I lifted up the left "boot" with one of my handy-dandy plastic pry tools I purchased when I upgraded my speakers. The boot easily popped out and I thread the antenna wire thru the hole and ran it under the lip of the weather strip on the inside down to the area where there is a screw in the panel by the clasp holder for the rear cargo cover. I removed that screw and pulled the panel slightly back and fed the wire behind the right tail light. You cannot see any wire whatsoever, only where it enters the boot. Here are the pics:

Here shows the finished wiring, you cannot see any wire at all except like I said where it enters the boot. Oh btw I put a drop of silicon caulk where the wire goes into the boot just as a precaution. I entered the boot at the bottom, so water could not enter, plus i looped the wire as it entered the boot so any water will simply drip off.

I basically then followed Eddie Bells directions EXCEPT I did not run the wire to the dash. What I did was I removed the rear seat, ( easy as pie btw, do as he says and it is a snap, trust me, and it goes back in just as easy, matter of fact, i couldn't believe how easy it was). Anyway, I removed the rear seat because i passed the wire under the carpet at the lip of the rear seat area then i ran the wire up the hump to the rear console. I removed the rear console, again so simple to do, and ran my wire up to the cup holder. Here are the finished pics:

Here is the antenna on the outside of car. I plan to get a magnetic wire channel when i completely finish the outside I'll post a pic, but here it is as it stands now:

Hey did i mention i love xm? would you like to see pics of my inno in my office and in my home? let me know lol.

And as Freddie said at the end of "I'm going Slightly Mad" ... "there you have it" lol

Nice! I, for one, think the Inno looks a lot better with the wire hidden...much cleaner and more professional looking that way.

hey thank you evan, do you know where i can get any kind of channel for wire for the outside? prefereably something with a magnet on the bottom of it. If i can't find anything like that i'll simply move the antenna housing closer to the lip of the rear cargo door and tuck the excess wire under the boot.

btw, I chose the cup holder install because i didn't want to alter anything on the dash, it is so sleek looking.

    Bryan,

Yes, running the wire that way you did works great and it's clean. It doesn't look that great having the wire run over the lip and the trim...

I did the same thing when I installed XM... I just made a hole in the back of the boot and ran the wire through it and added rubber cement.

I have my antenna right in front of the hatch door. Looking at this photo, I still had 30-day plates on the car when I did this mod. The car was brand new and I ripped it apart!!! What was I thinking???!!!

    Cheers,

I don't have any idea on the channel for the wire...that's a good idea though, I could use something like that on my wife's highlander hybrid...maybe check at a stereo install place and see what they use.

Ok Evan i'm gonna check that out as well as other places.

@ Bob: you don't need to drill a hole in the boot, just pop it up, it lifts up real easy, then silicon it where it enters, and enter it at the bottom. Shouldn't have any probs.

Bob I moved my antenna up closer to the AM/FM antenna, cause I'm in the mountains, much further north of you as you know. How is your reception where you have it placed? Oh and are you ever gonna come visit me?

Hey btw if you look at my pic with the open rear cargo, you can look out the window on the right and see the NH mountains. That is my garage btw, we have pretty nice views... ask Fireengineer Wayne if you don't believe me lol. Or come see for yourself.

PPS I love the color of your prius bob.

Thanks for sharing your new install pictures. I'm not going to bring up that in your old post you said the antenna stays on the dash! :)

It looks much cleaner now with the wires hidden, I'll have to decide how to mount mine once its installed.

Again thanks for all the information, if nothing else you converted one person to the Inno, from a factory unit!

A small suggestion if I may. Go back to the place that did your invisible bra and get a scrap piece to put under the location of anything magnetic on the roof. Even with the tiny feet it will scratch the finish at some time, trust me.

And try the antenna directly behind the AM/FM antenna towards the edge of the roof seam with the hatch. I think you'll be surprised with the reception, when I was traveling through the mountains by you I had no drop-outs except in one pass to the east of you, that was only for a couple of minutes.

That looks very nice. I ended up putting my Pioneer Airware on the hump on the floor and use the remote to control it. I don't often change a channel once it's on.

I put my antenna behind the regular antenna...

The reception is great with no dropouts, unless it's under a bridge for several seconds or on the North side of tall buildings.

    Hey thanks guys.

@ Wayne: Good idea! I'll just call them and ask them to send me piece of some scrap venture shield. Excellent suggestion. Also like the suggestion of where you said for placment. I'm gonna try it there, I thought I would get better signal strength higher up the roof of the car because it is elevated, but I will try your suggestion. Placing it there will eliminate the need for me to buy wire channel, so if the reception is just as good there, I'll keep it there. Thank you!

@aff709: Nice install! I assume the wires and such are under the carpet in the hump. Are you also using an Aux In port? Where/how did you run your wires, I'm just curious.

I had a Inno for about 9 months. Absolutely loved the recording and portability it offered me. However, sadly it was stolen from my car (my fault for leaving it in there).

How does the audio sound on the line in? We pick up our prius today and I'm trying to decide between integrated XM in the car or going with another portable unit.

    Thanks!

I wish, actually I used white wire wrap when goes down the hump on the passenger's side and under the carpet there, so it's real easy to remove. I have a 2005, which doesn't have an AUX, but I do have a DICE for my iPod, which does.

Well I finally pulled the trigger on the Inno the other day thanks to the great information from PriusFTW and it is a fantastic little unit. I just temporarily placed the antenna on the dash and experienced no dropouts at all to this point. The clarity is excellent using the Aux In (I did felt the volume level was a little low) and since its portable I think it's a much better alternative to the integrated unit.

Another question PriusFTW what are you using to mount the unit in your cupholder? I can't make out the name in your pictures but its a nice looking install!

Congrats! Glad it is working out for you!

    1) As for the volume, there are 2 ways you can connect your aux in either in the docking bay or directly in the headphone connection on the Inno. If you use the docking bay connection, make sure that your "line output" in settings ---> setup on the Inno is turned all the way up. If you use the headphone connection, adjust the volume to max directly on the unit.

2 )I bought that cupholder setup at Best Buy. I bought it for my iPod, but it is so versatile that I was able to use it for my Inn. I'll look up the brand for you and post back later.

Shows you how detailed I read the manual :) I was running it through Line out but didn't know you could adjust the volume...Thanks!

I appreciate you taking the time to check the brand for me....once you post the info looks like a trip back to Best Buy will be in order...

Again, I appreciate your detailed replies and info on your install, hopefully others are considering this unit now as it really is a fantastic option over the integrated unit.

I haven't played with moving my antenna so I don't know if the reception is better or worse than other places but I've had no complaints. It works similar to my last car which had the antenna in the middle of the roof. For a frame of reference, I can get a signal without a loss all the the way through Franconia Notch..

Yes, you have a great location with great views! Please don't remind me that I should be living up there!!! :)

Glad to read that you followed Wayne's tip about getting something to put under the antenna. It really does some damage to the clearcoat. I just got lazy and never did anything about it until this spring. That spot now had scratches that are too deep to remove without brining it to a body shop. What's worse, is after waxing the roof, it only made the antenna slide around more, scratching a larger area....

I'll drop you a PM: How about if I stop through as I'm off to Mom's for bad food and bad conversation? Will you be around?

Yes, I love the color of my car. I really like how it is sometimes green and other times gray....

    Cheers,
