"Fighting terror" in Iraq prevents it here

"Six people have been arrested in a plot to fire grenades and kill scores of soldiers at a New Jersey Army installation, the United States attorney’s office in New Jersey said at a news conference today. Four of them were born in the former Yugoslavia, one was born in Turkey and one in Jordan, said a spokesman for the office, Greg Reinert. "

I keep hearing, especially here in Fred's, how invading Iraq has made us safer (well, those of us still in the US, certainly not our kids involved in that fiasco in Iraq); that 'attacking terror over there' has prevented it from happening here. That this is proof that what dubya has dragged us into is "working". Wrong again; I'm shocked.

I also understand the prevention of this was initiated by some clerk in a store who watched a videotape he was dubbing to DVD that had some Jihadist-type activity on it. He alerted the local pd, who in turn contacted the feds. Kudos to the clerk for taking action, but it seems like the stupidity of taking the tape in to dub to DVD is what really blew their plan. Unfortunately, the next group probably won't make the same stupid mistake because, for some insane reason, we had to publically annoince how the bad guys tripped themselves up. I guess the stupidity isn't limited to the terrorists. Duh.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the earlier thread about Fort Dix before posting this. No need for a second thread on the same subject; but I wasn't able to withdraw it.

The "fight them over there so we don't fight here" has always been nothing more than an euphemism. There is nothing to prevent terrorists from all over the world that are completely unrelated to Iraq to come over in disregard of hopelessly localized efforts.

I've said it before. Terrorism is a law enforcement issue that the military is ill equipped to handle.

"Fight them over there instead of over here" is yet another tag line to scare or misinform(or both) the mass public. Sheeple who have double digit IQ points will buy into it like "weapons of mass destruction" "cut and run"(don't hear that one as much these days), "flip flop", "clear skies initiative," etc... The Rove machine understands this. He understands the mass public cares more about the cover of the book rather than it's content.

Worse than that...we're still not in agreement as to who "they" are...

"An undeclared war on an invisible enemy backed by a silent majority." Actually, that was Vietnam, but sounding more and more like this one, too...

From the leftist perspective, the burden of proof as to who "they are", are bright orange T-shirts with "TERRORIST" in big black lettering...

On a side note. It appears that the idea of having citizens be on the lookout for suspicious behavior of other citizens worked perfectly this time. These guys were caught because they took a home made jihadi video to a camera store to be converted into a DVD and a store worker turned them in.

Yes, this was a bright spot in this story, but should not, in my opinion, have been revealed. This just teaches future people to learn from the mistakes of their less-intelligent predecessors. Me, I want my terrorists to be this stupid and ineffective.

It also can be used to place that irritating neighbor of yours in the feds spotlight, pulling resources from where they might otherwise be better employed. This civilian vigilence can, like most things, work both ways. However, I'm glad it appears to have worked this time.

However, there is a question of whether or not federal agents are guilty of entrapment. The video store apparently had a sign that said, "Jihadi Videos our Specialty" in the window.

These people don't bother me. It's the neocons who want them either in Gitmo or pushed back south of the border.

You do have to admit that we have a pretty ugly record of torturing little brown people and robbing them of their resources, land, culture, economy, and lives.

I'm not labeling anyone politically though because most humans tend to do this. We just excel at it.
