I've heard about this on the news and maybe here somewhere... but I went to get Mothers Day flowers, was driving down the one-way parking isle (stealthily) and almost had some elderly people (70's ?) walk right into my Prius. They were walking same direction I was driving, to my right along the backs of parked cars, and I actually was driving slowly on the left side to give them more room. They both suddenly turned left without looking and almost had heart attacks as I slammed on the brakes. Fortunately no CPR was necessary. Wonder if I can rig up an electrically controlled bicycle bell under the hood??

You could hook up a noisemaker. A bicycle bell will perhaps support people's image of the Prius as a toy. My choice would be a nice loud horn---perhaps the same as on a fire engine.

But people have to learn to actually look when walking near cars. They often don't, and there's little you can do about that.

You can be sure this couple will remember to look both ways first.

Sounds like hooking up a defibrillator would have been better in that situation...

Use an air horn. Right when they look, let 'em have it. That should take care of the no CPR issue. ;)

I've had to use my horn more than once to alert a pedestrian that I am driving by.

How about the type of music one usually hears with ice cream vans?

    Ding, ding, ding....

Must be played from an old stretched out tape, to give it that authentic sound.

One guy with a Xebra has rigged up a bicycle bell. That's what I want. Both for the Prius and the Xebra. Brrrrring-brrrrrring.

I think a amplified sample of loud machine gun burst would do nicely.

Have you all seen the train horns you can get from here?

    http://www.hornblasters.com

Watch the videos, hilarious! I would LOVE to mount one of those up, but I'm not sure where it would be. ;)

    Imperial March from Star Wars

Ride of the Valkries by Wagner

I had the same idea! The Prius needs a second "horn" that is simply a bicycle bell, to gently warn pedestrians. Sounds like a great aftermarket idea.

I think this would be pretty funny (in a good way) -- "ring, ring" as you drive through a parking lot :D

And it could prevent a serious injury...

I have had people cross right in front of me when I'm stealthing through parking lots. But not that "shortest distance" crossing. Oh no. They have to walk from one side to the other at an angle that creates the absolutely longest distance and puts them in the roadway for as long as possible.

I stealth right behind them the whole way. Every once and a while, one of them will turn to check for traffic and absolutely freak when I'm sitting there smiling and waving.

    Priceless.

    I've got your solution!

Install one 6"x9" speaker under the hood, wired to an iPod docking station inside the car.

Digitally record the sound of a 426 Hemi, rumbling at low idle.

As you cruise in stealth mode, play the sound of the 426 hemi at high volume. Not only will people hear you approaching, they'll think you're a manly man with your V8-powered hybrid!

Just put new Goodyear Comfort Trerads on my Prius and man are they quiet! My wife almost lost her water when I pulled into the open garage behind her' she was doing some spring cleaning! I almost lost my water laughing!

p.s. Craig Ferguson from Late Late Show, CBS has a girl scream that would work really well.

How about playing a recording of squeaky pedals, like you had on an old tricycle: "squeak, squeak, squeak..." That way if anyone asks, you can tell them it's pedal powered.
