I'm thinking that 20% is about right, unless it's only a free oil change, then I will kick in an additional 10%.

P.T. Barnum said it MANY years back: "...There's one born every minute." If you don't get the drift of my response, then you need to Google P.T.Barnum for further information.

    You have to be kidding!

How much did you tip the salesman who sold you the car?

Tip the service advisor? You have to be kidding! He draws a salary to do his job and signed on for that salary-no more unless the dealership gives him a payraise. If on the other hand he was paid as a waiter or waitress tips are expected as part of the salary but not the service writer. I've never heard of tipping a service advisor and I've owned many new automobiles.

I wasn't sure of the proper protocol, so I just gave him $100. I was concerned because he said "they were losing money on the deal" and I was afraid he wouldn't get his commission.

How about tipping the parts guy? Wouldn't that only be fair too?

My dealer has valet parking and has "no tipping" sign on the valet booth. I might have thought about tipping the valet if not for this sign, but I would have never considered tipping a service writer.

But he is the GO TO GUY in the service department. He is every bit as important as the waiter in a fine restaurant.

I did tip my salesman with a "Good Review". The review will allow the salesman to get enough year end bonuses. B)

I agree in theory with Mr. White in the first scene @ Bob's Pancake House from the movie "Reservoir Dogs" on the subject of tipping. B)

Warning: if you are unfamiliar with the movie and google the script, you <strike>may</strike> <strike>might </strike> probably will be offended at some of the language unless you are a caucasian, heterosexual hit man; which is why I'm not posting a link.

That said, I do tip the usual suspects.

True, but without him, you have to walk to the restaurant.

There. I've convinced myself. I'm doing 30% every visit from now on!

Is this anything like tipping cows? I find if I tip the service advisor past about 30 degrees he falls over.
